  • 95 3100 trans swap?

what trannys can be swapped into a 95 3100 grand prix? what is the factory trans model of the 3100 trans??

basically i'm looking for a stronger faster shifting transmission that will help out my 1/4. or are they any modifications that can be done to my current tranny?

Stock is a 4T60E. There really isn't anything that can be easily swapped in... The only "better" auto is the 4T65E, but you have to do alot of custom circuitry and programming to even think of it working. There is always the 5-spd route, but that's alot of work as well, considering no 3x00 vehicle has come stock from GM with a 5-spd.

Well I know in my gear box I have three things That I think help with the longevity... There is an after market hardend reverse reaction drum that can be obtained, this drum doesn't get its splines to be compromised that easy. And a the steel composite thrust washer for the driven sprocket support/2nd clutch drum from a 4t65e that will fit, thats somithng that the gets beat up alot, in 4t60(e) they are made from plastic. usually goes after 100,000miles and the 2nd drums starts to grind at the support. Also the transgo shift correction deals with errors and if I recall does raise the system pressure a touch. New clutches(aftermarket) wil definately make the trans shifts more grabby than the gm clutches.

Theres also the shimming of the accumulators.

Thes few things will make it more durable. The biggest thing to worry about is the final drive gear set. I gues that is pretty much the truth on most FWD cars...

I'm working on a t65e swap as we speak, the hard part about it is being a 95 like yours you have to upgrade your PCM to OBDII which means a lot of other parts to. Not super hard but not an easy project either. Im finding the PITA part to be sourcing all the needed parts at prices that dont cost a fortune. Luckily Ive got most of it together now.

Even the T65 will croak with the right driver though, so if you like to rag on your car like I do youll need to do more than just swap in a better tranny.

Also the T60 can be built to take power (ive seen quite a few that do) the t65 just has a larger and more accessible aftermarket.

Rayspestos makes good HD clutches and bands for the 4t60 they just came out last year. Though the problem areas of the 4t60 are not the clutches so much as the slop in the input shaft and a few other areas. I need to look in my book to tell you what needs to be changed.
