  • F23 swap into a 2003 malibu with 3100sfi

Okay. So what I have gathered so far

    F23 from 2000-2002 cavi/sunfire (non-ecotec)

    Clutch assembly/flywheel from same car.

Shifter assembly, linkage and axles from an ecotec "N" body ....... Here lies my issue. Since someone laid this all out there for me I have been searching trying to figure out which "n" body cars had ecotec.

And also I was wondering what I had to do ecu wise to get rid of codes and run properly?

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

2000+ Grand Am/Alero... to start. Even though the generation started in 99 the 2.4L Quad4 was carried over that first year... I don't know if the Malibu was ever equipped with a manual...

It wasn't. I just didn't know the quad 4 was an ecotec motor

The quad 4 isn't an ecotec motor but it should use an F23 still if it is 00+. When looking for your J-body F23 it has to be from a 2.2L pushrod car. Not a 2.4 quad 4 or 2.2 ecotec.

Right. I'm trying to figure out which "n" body has an ecotec that I can get the axles and shift linkage/assembly from.

You just need to make sure the axles come from a manual trans car. So like someone else mentioned look for a manual trans 00+ Grand Am/Alero

As far as pcm,i've never done this swap but would be glad to reprogram the pcm as a manual for you. Assuming it's as simple as programming an LS swap with a non-electronic trans.
If that is any help to you since i'm local(well,in Oklahoma)i'm equipped to program almost all GM V6/V8's from 96-up so will be glad to help if I can.

                  WOOOOHOOOO

Just took a stroll through the local pull-a-part and found everything I need for my f23 swap.

Except the flywheel. Does anyone know which one I will need?

You can use one from the 2.2L J-body that you get the trans from... Or just buy a brand new one for around $50

One more. Should I get a higher rated clutch or will OEM replacement be okay.

I would be more concerned with the design of the pressure plate... if you use a clutch meant to be used with the 2.2 you should be fine, but if you go with a larger diameter V6 clutch this rule has been followed successfully in the Fiero world:

Okay. So 2.2 flywheel and clutch. Prolly go with something like a spec stage 2 if it's available. Heavier car more power(I could be wrong)

Better safe than sorry. Had a stage 3 in my 240sx, don't ever wanna go that far again with a street car.

Yeah a stage 2 is a good idea. But if you can find a stage 2 V6 clutch with a pressure plate that will clear, that would be a better solution. Look for clutches for a 3.1L Cavalier or something like that.

The V6 clutch has a larger diameter disc which should be capable of handling a bit more power with the same material.
