  • Whining

I know that is a general symptom. However, I want to head off whatever problem it may be before it becomes a major issue.

    89 Buick Regal, 3.1 w/ 4 speed auto.

When cold, everything is fine. As it warms up the transmission develops a distinctive whine during acceleration. There is also a pretty nasty flare on the 3-2 downshift.

When I got the car with 20k miles on it, I did a transmission fluid change. The car now has 89k, and I did a fluid change again at around 60k.

Is this just a sign of an aging transmission that will only benefit from a rebuild? Maybe some Lucas mucus will make it better? Thoughts?

If it only did it cornering I know my old auto did it. What I read online was the grommet between the filter and trans didn't seal correctly and it this would allow the pump to draw in air causing it to whine.

As far as the Lucas, I wouldn't touch the trans stuff. It caused my transmission to go from fine to having a couple of issues. It started to refuse to go into OD and it also started slipping in lockup.

Personally I tend to stay far away from the fix-in-a-bottle type of substances. Pretty much the only non standard stuff I will use in a vehicle is the Lucas oil stabilizer and SeaFoam. I've never had an issue with either of them as far as undesired results. These are just my personal 2¢ worth. I am not an auto pro, just an enthusiast and part time shade tree type (when needed).
