  • 4T60E-Reverse, Third only

    95 Achieva 3100, 4T60E, selectable detents are P, R, N, D, 3, 2.

This just started literally yesterday-the car is always in third. Taking off from a stop light it shifted late from first to second-I pulled over, checked the fluid..it was fine and I continued on. It didn't do this again. (shift solenoid going bad?) The car sat for a few hours and when I went to drive it again I realized I now only have third. No lockup, either. In D at 55 if I let off the engine drops back down to idle, if I place it in third I get engine braking, and if I place it in second...it does nothing, it stays in third. Reverse works fine. Had the pan off when I got it in 2011 and there was nothing of concern. Never slipped.

Fluids red, SES light isn't on although even if it was I don't have anything that will read it. I did some reading though-it appears as though when a 4T60E only allows third, this is indicative of being in failsafe mode? I really want to believe this is an electronic issue. If anyone has any documentation on the 4T60E (particularly the troubleshooting charts) I'd love to see it. I'd probably be willing to let the subframe down if I absolutely have to change the 1-2 shift solenoid but..if the whole transaxle had to come out..i'd probably just part it out.

the manual shaft(which is operated via the shifter) will override the shift solenoids depending on position. putting the shifter down into 1st/2nd should force the trans into second gear. that fact that it isn't should be a clue as to what has gone wrong.
1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

I thought so..it's starting to look more internal now. Got first back though! I did the transmission on my Grand Marquis-this looks like it would be a fight every step of the way . I lost all forward motion today. I assume it overheated based on the fluid being well overfull. Let it sit for a bit and I got it to engage 1st by placing the shifter in 2nd. That's all I get for forward gears. 1st. Would move w/o slipping in 3rd and D after this, but no upshifting. I'll drop the pan just for laughs tomorrow, besides that I'll assume it's toast.
