  • 3400 adapter bellhousing rwd?

Hey everybody, I'm new here and been trying to figure out how to swap a 3400sfi into a 72 vega. I was originally thinking of trying to use a 700r4 trans and while on eBay I stumbled across this auction 321062227290 for an adapter bellhousing for a t5 transmission. Is this guy right on it being able to use it to adapt a t5 to the 3400? It would be cool to keep the old vega stick shift and would solve the issue I haven't figured out of using the 700r4 what to do about the starter location. Anybody got any details of adapting either trans to the 3400 for rwd and any disadvantage to either trans idea? Thanks for any help anybody can provide.

What t5 were you planning on using a s10 t5 should bolt right up. mustang on is the only t5 that needs that bellhousing its from a newer s10

I don't think my reply went through so I'll try again. I was thinking a Mustang T5 cable speedo trans or a late Camaro T5. The wrecking yards around here won't sell the bellhousing separately only with the s10 trans and they got a really low first gear besides they want $750. plus a core and I know I could pick up a Mustang trans around here cheaper than that. I want to put the vega together for a highway car to commute to and from work. My Fiero is ok but I can't pick up anything from the hardware store in it and the vega is kinda like a station wagon in a small package.

Camaro or mustang T5s should bolt to that eBay bellhousing I think. You could probably use a flywheel/clutch setup for the 2.2 S10 as well.

Seems to me that V8 camaro t5s might have a different trans-bellhousing bolt pattern but I'm not really sure.

Well I decided to pass up on that bell housing and t5 idea. My wife didn't look to happy when I was talking about making it stick shift. What does everyone do that puts a 700r4 behind the 3400's do about the starter location? I thought about just grinding out the area where the 700's bell would interfere with the 3400's starter but I'm not sure if that would weaken the bell housing area of the 700r4 to much?

I think Superdave put a 700r4 behind a 3500; IIRC he didn't grind the bellhousing at all just had to modify the plastic torque converter dust cover

no grinding needed. You just have to trim the metal of the dust shield so the starter can poke through. it's probably a good idea to make a filler piece for the other side as well.

You will have to use a flexplate for a 95 2.2L S10 (iirc that's what mine was for).

Oh very cool. Thanks everybody. I never noticed that the 700r4's from the v6 didn't have the bell housing go down as far like the stick shift transmission did. That makes things a whole lot easier for my vega and the Nash metropolitan that my wife wants as it will get a 2.8 from a parts car Fiero I have in the back yard. Thank you all for your help.

I plan on basically using the same transmission and bell housing combo...were you happy with the clutch setup?
