  • Transmission issues.

First of all I would like to apologize for this message, as it is not a GM trasmission but
I know you guys know your stuff and hopefully you can shed some light on this.

A friend of mine has a 95 crown victoria and the aftermarket transmission cooler sprung a leak and lost most of the transmission fluid. He noticed when it wouldn't go into reverse so he parked it and we had it towed.

Now transmission cooler replaced, refilled with ATF. The car will drive, shifts gears smoothly, no slipping or lerching. However it refuses to go into reverse.

Catch 22, if we put it in neutral it wants to move forward as if it is in drive, but in reverse it does not do anything, almost as if it is in neutral, reving the engine does nothing.
We carefully had a couple guys push the car backwards while in reverse, and we can feel the transmission fighting it, as if the car is sort of in drive.

Also I noticed that the vehicle will not start in neutral. the starter refuses to engage. Though it starts perfectly fine in park.

Has anyone encountered anything like this before?
we had one incident a few months ago where the car refused to start, but after cylcing through all the gears I felt something pop in the steering column and it proceeded to start. I assumed the park/neutral switch jumped and thus thought the car was in gear when it was in park and the pop was the mechanism re-alligning itself.

I have no idea what is wrong here. Hoping its not the transmission.

    Thanks for your insight.

    She's probably cooked my friend.
There's a band that controls 1st & reverse in the AOD/4r70w. I'd imagine the actuator seal is perforated or the band itself is smoked.
That transmission is very sensitive to fluid condition and amount.

yep, you sir are correct. She went to the shop, mechanic believes one of the clutch packs or something related is seized or burnt up.
      Its a done deal...
