  • Question : Is a 4T60E of a Chevy Venture same as Buick Regal

I have a 1998 Chevy Venture with a 4T60E that is almost dead. I woukld like to swap this with a 4T60E out of a 1995 Buick Regal.
Are both of these transmissions the same?

I just want to be shure.

    Thanks for your help

    short answer, no.

long answer, you could probably swap enough parts from one to another to get it to function correctly, but at that point, you would probably be better off finding another 98 4T60E from another Venture/U-body.

      Thanks for your answer.
I live in Belgium and 4T60E tranny's are very difficult to find here.
      I have a choice of a 95 or a 98 buick Regal.
What would be the best one and what would need changing for this to work with a Venture.

I'd say the side covers will not be the same. That is something that could be swapped over. The final drive ratios will not be the same, but you can live with that. That is all I know, there is a member here that is a master when it comes to the 4T60.

I hope that this member who is a 4T60E expert reads this post. I have to install the tranny the next coming week. Thanks all for your help.

its doable but the problem is there were revision to the 4t60-e so you might have harsh shift with a trans that is lower then 1996. and you might get a CEL because of the different gearing and you trans might bangs the gars because the computer feel like the trans is slipping.

that won't be an issue with the 60E.... the PCM doesn't control shift speed, only shift points. the 65E is a different story.

yes you right it's vacuum modulated, the shift points and the Fdr is in the ECM. that will cause an CEL because it will think it's slipping. And you need to use your old TCc because the old one is not made of the same material, it will make the trans shudder between shifts

It wouldn't shudder between shifts it's only the lockup clutch that is different material so you would only get a shudder then, you just need to get one that is compatible with the same TCC apply method your car uses... and most are PWM from 96+ so he shouldn't have to worry about anything.

These will swap with out any issues, the only things that may be different would be the final drive, but this could be compensated with changing the diff. But I'm sure they are the same stall and gear ratio. You will know that the stall will be the same by comparing the 4 letters on the tourqe in the middle of it, on a sticker. I swapped a 4t60e from a 99 gp to a 95, I was told the tcc is applied differently but this is only a signal from the ecu, everything works out normal and fine. Good luck, recourse flush the trans cooler for some piece of mind and blow it out with compressed air.
