  • Question : 3400 to 3100 Trans?

    Will a 3400 bolt up to a 3100's 4T60 transmission, or would I require a 3400 4T60's bellhousing?

Also, how much power can a 4T60 take?

  • #2
It'll bolt right up, no problems at all.

Not sure on the power handling if the 4T60 though.

Depends on how much power, how long since it had been rebuilt, and what it was/is rebuilt with. If it's the factory 1995 4t60e that's in your car, the 3400 will make it wear out more quickly. Though I wouldn't worry too much about having it "built" if you don't plan on doing much more than a stock 3400.

There is a member on here that is running a built 3400/3500 hybrid with NOS and his 4T60e is holding up well. However, he did build his 4t60e to hold the power. There was another member that had a built 3400/3500 hybrid with a turbo who blew up 3? transmissions in less than a year. But they were used transmissions.
You may or may not know 10 times what i do.

So there are parts to build up these transmissions to handle more power?

I plan on turbocharging the 3400 I swap into this car and I most definitely don't want transmissions grenading. A blown transmission is what killed my first car.

Now everything that has been done to my trans has been done in an odd fashion

I first purchased a Deluxe rebuild kit from Northern Auto which included all the bonded pistons for the apply clutches, two bands, and more, Part Number #84008EA The piston are not always needed since they don't wear out that often and most of the apply pistons have lip seals which come in the soft kit. Also when I purchased this full kit it contained the full bushing kit so I did not have to purchase this separate, I listed all the items separate above because if you buy a full kit you waste money on a set of clutches you won't use. I didn't do the math, but if you get a full kit that comes with steels and bushings pistons, and bands (if noted) then you may save some money over buying all individual. I only recently did the Stage 1 kit from Level 10 where I'm replacing all the clutches and steels, and also putting in all new seals since I'm in there, I'm leaving the bushings alone since they look just fine.

My trans now has Alto Red Eagle high performance power pack clutches in the 2nd pack and the 4th pack, and I also now have a RevMax torque converter.

It will also chirp second gear because of what I've done to it... I have yet to break anything in it and the day I do I will be converting to a 4t65e.

Wow, that's a LOT of parts.

Pretty much replacing half the transmission...

Wear items yes... I did replace near everything... I didn't want it to break and being able to put down 12's in the 1/4 at 107mph makes it all worth it.

Well it's probably cheaper than a whole new transmission...

But you can't order this stuff all in one enormous box?

I was not able to find one person who supplys all of this stuff... plus that list contains some things you may not need... its a list of everything that I've done to the trans since I started moding this one so some things did replace other mods.

Basic things needed is the valves for the valve body if its an older year, the Transgo shiftkit, and then reputible clutches and the other hard parts I listed, the sprag and 4th hub and reverse shell... You probably dont have to do the bushings. Most you will figure out when you take it apart.
