  • IMS / Internal Mode Switch....

after reviewing an article here, i would like to know if anyone knows how easy/hard/if possible it is to switch a "non IMS" trans into a "IMS equiped" trans?

its based on the info i read here...

which reads.... "4T65E with "IMS" have the newer type of shifter position sensor, called the "Internal Mode Switch", as opposed to the style found on 4T60E and early 4T65E transaxles."

only thing i found was a very poorly made youtube video that i couldnt really quite understand what they did or was saying to be honest.

all i need to know is if its possible because i found and EXTREMELY affordable trans but it does not have the IMS, but my car does (according to the charts in the link above).

    thanks!

from what i can tell..... the IMS replaced (or based on the diagrams i'm looking at, supplimented) the external style of PRNDL decoding switch as used in later 4T60Es.

based on that, you should be able to use a "IMS" trans in a non IMS car, just have to put a PRNDL switch on top of it like the late 4T60E / early 65 would. probably have to splice in your own connector to do so, but electrically, it should be compatible.

using a non-IMS trans in a IMS car..... also SHOULD be possible, if you're willing to splice in a new connector. i'm not 100% on that though.

According to the chart, my Monte Carlo is an IMS equipped trans, the donor car is a non IMS.

so I should be able to take the side cover off both, take out the switch and harnesses From my trans and install into the other trans.

at least that's what I think.

        maybe?

        i don't play with 65E that often.

I am now wondering how accurate that chart is because it doesn't show a 3.29 ratio for a Monte carlo, and I am certain I have one. FR9 is shown on my code list on the trunk lid and door.
