So let me get this. You push the clutch in to start like a maual, have the shifter in Neutural and slowly let off the clutch and as you do this, it grabs and dies? But i would start by bleeding the clutch fluid and changing the tranny oil. In the tranny oil look for anything that looks out of place color, smell, or metal shavings. But i sounds like a rebuild tranny is in your future. But rebuild kits for that (5 speed right?) are kinda cheap to buy and come with step by step instructions. Plus do the shifter shift nice with your foot on the clutch like 1-2-3-4-5-R or is it hard?

If the clutch isn't grabbing when it is pushed in there most likely is no air in the line.

My old trans in my Ranger did this too. It was stuck in one gear or a synchro was messed up or something. There were tons of brass shavings in the oil when I drained it.

I do agree, though. Rebuild or replace. I replaced mine.
