  • Question : What is that oring on the input shaft of the 4T60E

To make a long story short, I forgot to put that o-ring in there. I installed a brand new input shaft seal, but forgot the o-ring that goes in the groove in the input shaft. How important is this o-ring, and can I get by ok without it? (Engine and trans are already sitting back in the car and axles installed, so is this worth the effort to pull it all back out again to install?)

I believe I read somewhere, but can't remember where atm that this o-ring was just a secondary seal to help prevent the input shaft seal from leaking, and is important in high performance applications? This car is completely stock 3.1 v6, nothing high performance about it.

No you can not live without that o-ring... it's not a secondary seal. That o-ring is the seal for the Torque Converter Clutch and has to be present otherwise you'll have no lockup and god who knows what else will happen when it attempts to go into lockup since it will be a huge Hydraulic leak, granted internally but it may still over stress the pump and break something.

      Ah man that sucks........

You can install the o-ring now while the engine/trans isn't broken. Or install it later with a new trans or new engine. Either way, you face the work.

Sucks but you will be happy you fixed it right. I had to pull my engine/trans when I was done because the darn hydraulic TOB wasn't engaging at all. I had to prime it by hand and it clicked into place, worked great ever since.

      Good luck!
