Wouldn't bother doing it with a 3.1. Truth fully I wouldn't buy a Monte with a 3.1, Drum brakes, no duel climate control, possibly no abs, steering column shifter.

        96 Z34 3.4 SC DOHC Getrag, 284 5sd manual transmission, stage 3spec clutch, 97 engine, 97 pcm, S3 intercooler 1 of 1 Roots SC LQ1 in the world 8.5 psi.

monte LS, MOST had console shifters, all had ABS(not that it works worth a damn for most people), yes drums, option for dual zone...
1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

i actually got all that, and i got the floor shifter. ive already converted the rear drums over to disc brake. it was just an idea. i got abs, its not a slow 3.1 tho, i got all the mods i done to it in my signature, i just wanted to covert it to a 4 or 5 speed, i just wasnt sure how to do it

Its alot of time and money for the swap unless you already own a DHP tuner and are experienced I wouldn't even bother.

Only 2 mods cam and exhaust the rest are all not worth much and the sound equipment is just added weight. Monte's are heavy anoph already.

A getrag 282 will bolt where a 4t60e was. The mounts are getting hard to find for a w-body but possible.

You will also need to swap the axles to fit the trans to hubs.

Mounting the clutch pedal and master will be tricky but possible. My 96GP is a w-body and I swapped in a 5-speed. It is entirely possible.

Best way is to find another w-body car with a 5-speed for the parts car. Lots of little things needed can be sourced from the parts car. Like the trans mount. The brake booster might be too big if you got the large one. But having a parts car will solve that too, just yank the booster used. I didn't have a parts car and it took me a year to source different parts needed, fabricate some things, build a hydraulic clutch with different parts from here/there. Can be done much faster though, I like to take my time and do it right the first time.....and even then I still goofed a few things up, had to fix them.
