  • 95 GA SE 4th Gear Issue.

OK I have already done a search and can't seem to find people who have the exact same problem as I do with my 95 GA 3100 sfi auto.

Here is the issue. My car used to go into fourth gear most of the time till recently. The tcc has always had a little shudder and sometimes I would have to cycle the key on and off and it would go right into 4th but it has always gone into 4th and lockup. Lately it will only go into 3rd and locks up no problem. I can't feel it trying to engage fourth so I'm not sure what could be causing it. I added some Lucas to the transmission fluid and still no dice.

I have tried replacing the vacuum modulstor, checked the neutral safety switch, checked the connector on the trans and also had the computer scanned which turned up only an EGR code.

The car has 326k miles so I know it doesn't owe me anything but this is the only issue I have with it right now. This issue started after I changed the PITA heater core, no idea why...

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

its neutralizing, so its rather low on fluid, bands slipping, or torn lip seals, most likely all or just the 4th gear band is roasted. whats happening is that your pump is spinning faster creating more fluid pressure, which gives more mechanical pressure on your clutchs, if there is a leak on the drum that fills up with fluid and puts pressure on the clutch packs it will slip, that would be a torn lip seal. when you have no 4th, your planitery is spinning when the band is suppous to hold it tight and stop it so the planitay wont give the 3rd gear reduction.
there is no real easy fix aside throwing in new wear parts. i dont think you will be successful in pulling out the servo and lenghtening the rod for the 4th band, and re-installing, but that would possibly solve the issue till then next wear part all out fails on the trans. you probably dont have room to do this with the tranny in the car.
