  • How do you get the last bolt off a 4L60E?

    Got everything else taken care of but the last bolt, the one that's in backwards. I can only reach it coming through the passengerside wheel well with an extension bar. It's in tight, and all I get is tool flex and the bolt won't budge. I needed a breaker bar to get all the other ones out, not sure how I can get this one out like this. In a better life I would have just used my impact gun but the brand new tank I brought 2 years ago CAUGHT ON FIRE! (PS don't buy Sears tanks).

    Any tips appreciated. Right now I left it to soak in some WD40.

    you have to do it with extensions and some loose nut it will come out. Oh and You HAVE to put it back when you done...because your flywheel will shear. This bolt is a lotr more important then it looks!

    btw 4l60-E? dont you mean 4T60-e?

      4L60-E would be the RWD version of the 4 speed transmission.

      4=4 forward gears
      L=Longitude (RWD)
      T=Transverse (FWD)
      60=Power capacity (not sure about the conversion from the model number to power capacity in GMs format)
      E=Electronically controlled shifting

        Yeah, Thanks, I meant the 4T60. You have to understand I'm used to working on SBC's and dealing with their transmissions. I always hated FWD cars. This one I'm working on now is my DD that went out on me. All my tools and equipment is for working on RWD cars. I'm lucky I can use some of my stuff on this car since it's all GM it's all good. Still learning as I go along with this thing for the most part it's just patience trying to get clearance to everything. On the SBC it's easy to get stuff off and on and do what you need to do. The hard part is just knowing how to get to what you want it just looks impossible. On these FWD cars it actually is impossible hahahaha.

          Its been way to long since I pulled a tranny off an engine, but I oddly remember having to use a crow's foot on at least 1 of the tranny bolts.

            Thanks for all the advice. Going to give it a go again tomorrow. Decided to let it soak in WD40. Hopefully that will help. I miss my impact wrench

              Ya I hate that bolt. I use a impact swivel socket and a whole lot of extension, till I'm standing outside the fender with it. You basically have to feed it through and around first, then I apply lots of torque and watch the whole thing explode in my face, but it's usually broke free at that point. Have fun with it.

              Carbon canister and purge valve mod, place in large 30 Gallon can, cover, and place curbside, the city will do the rest.
              PCV valve and vent tube, reroute to exhaust to dump where it belongs, on the ground. Or add breathers and let it all free.

                2 long 1/2 extensions and a breaker bar... I just did it last weekend. Then again the car is apart more than I change my underwear.

                Always worked for me, and also last resort would be an impact gun, but the two extensions really kills any and almost all of the "impact" force reaching the bolt.

                  Use a standard depth socket, then couple together enough long extensions to go from the pass side and have at it.

                    Thanks, Got it out earlier today. Used a an extension, ratchet, and cheater pipe. As I thrust as the bar with all my might I yelled "Light Weight!" and broke free.

                      cheater pipe? You mean a BFP. Sometimes used with a BFH. If neither of those work get out the BFG.

                        I swear those cheapo autozone great neck tools can take some serious abuse. I've been trying to break them for years with no luck. My crapsman tools broke though.

                          I had to be careful when I lol'd. My wife works third and the bedroom is right over me and my mancave, lol. Still, that's hilarious
