  • Question : 3t40 shifting issues

ok. I have a 1993 Beretta 3.1 automatic transmission. for the past couple months I have been hearing a clunking noise from the transmission/axle area. I just replaced the axles and brakes last moth. While out seating the brakes, something broke in the transmission. Before towing it home I noticed it did not engage the gears even though I was shifting the lever in the car. I figure something major must have broke, so I shopped around and purchased a used transmission. After installing the trans and putting everything back together I am having the same problem with the gears not engage and the trans struggling to go back into park. Can anyone shed some light on what could be wrong....I am about ready to ditch it and walk until i can purchase something else.

have you inspected the shifter cable at both ends? Any kinks in the cable?

Yes, inspected the cables, no kinks. The shifter end is moving at the transmission and in the console. My feelings are it is the park/Neutral switch. That is the only thing that is still the same that I have not changed. It was doing the same thing right after it broke down. Like it is stuck in Neutral ans strains to go back into park.

Park neutral only had to do with being able to start it in those ranges.

Turns out it was me. In a rush to get my car back on the road. I failed to make sure the axle was installed all the way. No Brains, No headaches. All good now. Back on the road and shifting smooth. Now to continue the upgrades.
