  • Question : What is wrong with my trans!?!?

Ok so i had my friend rebuild my auto 4t60e, he rebuilt it with the same parts as jon (3400-95-modified) used on his trans minus the lsd but put in

dual stripe modulator, new sannox hardened valves, hardened reverse shell, hardened output shaft, reybestos stage 1 red clutches, transgo shift correction kit, i shimmed the accumulators and put a 19xx stall from a 01' grand am in it also to help me out alittle.

I am having big problems with the trans..

-Trouble shifting, manually upshift dosent help but will manually downshift.
-slipping in random gears, but mostly when going into first, sometimes seams like it dosent even transfer to the wheels until several tries.
-Randomly jumping into first gear after stalling to around 4k before doing so, other times moving fine and shifting into first around 2k.
-OVERHEATING when driven 5 miles highway
    - Seems to slip less when cold but dosent want to shift, when warmed seems to slip and shifts ok.

Anyone know what could have gone wrong with the rebuild or if it could be a sensor/wiring, torque converter bad, shift correction kit being put on improperly or valve body(valve sticking)?
Anyone know how i can test for any of these things being bad while the trans is in the car?

Any help is greatly appreciated, this is the only thing stopping me from driving my baby which has been sitting for 6 months during restoro.

    Thanx

What's the vacuum modulator set to? Try screwing the adjustment screw in all the way and backing off a turn or two. The clutches slipping could indicate too low pressure or low fluid level which can also cause overheating from the friction.

Pull the vacuum line off, there is a set screw in the vacuum port.

It's also possible the input shaft seals were damaged on reassembly. On reassembly it's good to pack vaseline on the input shaft/pump seals to help prevent this. I rebuilt a 700R4 that wouldn't shift out of 1st gear afterwards. The pro builder that took it apart afterwards said I did everything right except I damaged the input shaft seals when I installed the pump.

When I went through the valve body on a 4T60 I took my time and I took pictures and made sure that everything was clean and went back together the same way it was disassembled. If you've done this before and are sure all of the seals were installed properly I'd start suspecting the valve body, especially if the tranny worked fine before it was operated on.

ok so i put my old vac modulator back on today that worked fine before rebuild, it seemed to be ok but still sluggish when starting off, after it warmed up i drove some more and it shifted clear into 4th but when i floored it slipped when getting into higer rpms than shifted when i let off the gas alittle.

Than when i stopped at a stop light it wouldnt go into any gear no matter what the rpms or manual gear i was in, i let it sit for 10 mins than got back in and it slowly after many tries went into first and i crawled home.

something is seriously messed up here and i dead taking the trans out again.

There is nothing you can do now, with the sound of it you've already damaged clutches beyond repair inside and need to do it again... This is why I never trust anyone to do work on my car... and downfalls like this I can only blame myself and I don't need to go after anyone to get money for damages done to parts purchased.

I would honestly build you a trans but it may cost an arm and a leg to ship back and forth. Thats the biggest problem.

There's nothing like doing it yourself if you can. You can be as picky and maticulus as you want. I've built a Nissan auto, two 125s, a 440T4 and a 700R4. I went to a transmission parts store and purchased the kit and the $15 rebuild/update manual. I would take pictures to make sure everything was put back in its proper place as I laid everything out in order then systematically replaced and reinstalled. The 700 was the only one that had a hickup when put back on the road due to the damage I caused to the seals on assembly. I never had any guidance, I read as needed and took my time. I will add this is not the kind of project I think two people should work on at the same time unless you're very organized and of equal knowledge.

You'd be amazed at what you can do without formal training if you can read and follow instructions.

I appreciate is Jon but i do not have the time currently (70+hr work weeks) to even take the trans out again, the entire car is currently reassembled. I spoke to a man who owns a trans shop in my city who has been rebuilding transmissions for over 23years and who has rebuilt 500+ 4t60e's.

I am going to have to bite the bullet and have him do the labor and rebuild, which i should have just done in the first place, only problem is its very pricey and i will be waiting until mid next month for it to be done.

My retta has me more bummed out day after day, i just want her to be running on the road again, thanx for everyones help, i will let you know what went wrong when i know more, thanx.
