Unlike the 284 in my GP, the 282 in my beretta has no cover (housing) over the intermediate shaft. As in if I'm under the car and spin the passenger wheel I can see the intermediate shaft spinning, whereas my 284 the intermediate shaft is inside a housing for its entire length. What scares me more is that on the 282 at the trans end of the intermediate shaft are 3 bolt holes that seem like they would be for the securing bolts for a housing around the intermediate shaft. On top of all of this I can see the seal on the trans end of the shaft (its blue). So am I missing a housing for the intermediate shaft or is that just the way the 282 is? The previous owner told me the clutch was replaced within the last few months. I think the shop that did the work totally messed up as this thing needs a new T.O. bearing (squeaks a bit on disengagement and the clutch is high pedal effort) and it appears as if the intermediate shaft is missing the housing, AND the c.v. boot on the drivers side is torn all the way around
So looks like a c.v. joint sometime, whenever it starts to make bad noise, a clutch in the not too distant future, but what about the intermediate shaft? I'm kinda concerned about that, especially if that seal is exposed when it should not be.
Otherwise the car is in decent shape. Needs a new serpentine belt and the coolant tube to the heater core is darn rusty so I'll be replacing that before it rusts through. The 3.1 is fairly torquey and has a good amount of giddyup through 1st gear but it has no top end, falls on its face somewhere between 4-5k rpm and feels awful slow compared to the dohc. Thats ok tho.
