  • getrag swap, need some experienced help

am gathering info on swapping a 5 speed in to my 2001 grand am which has the 3.4 in it. i found that i need a getrag 282. will any getrag work, what one would be best for good highway mpg. i know i use the flywheel from the car which the getrag came off of, i need g6 axels. not sure what clutch pedal assembly i need yet. is their anything special i need to make this work that am not seeing. i have dhp tuner so i can delete the codes that i need to. i know their are some people that have done this, i would appreciate some help on this, thank you

The f23 would be an easier swap, and as far as the axles you better double check your lengths. I had to make custom axles for mine to fit. I used HPtuners to delete my codes and had no problems. Why don't you just make it easy on yourself, swap in an f40 and order the mounts the Milzy....

i belive you could just use five speed n body axles. tho its for a f23 the axles are the same. and thet say if you get a q4 282 and swap the bell housing the gears are beter but the v6 282 works ok with my 3500.

^^^^ his f40 coment is rather "bolt in"^^^^^^^

282's are hard to come by as well in good condition... I say go for the newer versions listed above that may be more available, as well as part availability to repair them.

I can get a 282 from a 92 cav z24 for a hundred, what trans is good for highway gas mileage.

                Not the Q4 282 with it's 3.94 FDR.

and especially the W41(W40?) versions, which had the shallow 5th gear as well IIRC.

Since the 91 Z24s didn't come with the H.O. (W41) quad 4, yes, the 91 would be fine as far as 282's go.

never happened. in 95, they moved to the third generation and only had 4 cylinder engines from that point.

if it is a 94, and hooked up to a 3.1, then yes, it's an actual 282 and has the steepest FDR and 5th gear available.
