So I dont think Getrag is a GM product, they can be found in alot of other makes from domestics to imports. So this brings me to the question as to why the Getrag trannys behind our 60* V6 are so limited in terms of power and higher rpm shifting?? Now theres a company here in tampa that deals with getrag trannys in drew park called all-star transmission, he doesnt see anything internally that would make them any different between imports and domestics. Even said the neons use getrags? I'm starting to wonder WTF is going on.... I have a hard time shifting on any gear above 6000rpm's and it was rebuilt prior to installing it. I've just been doing as much research as possible and even took my clutch disk to tampa clutch to have redone since I had ceramic pads on both sides of my 4 puck clutch. Now ceramic and kevlair, same shiznit. Anyway, I forgot to mention that I dont have the HM282, I'm running the NVG-T550 trans with the internal slave. It shifts smooth as silk as a daily commuter, got those bugger bushings in 2 weeks ago and feels even solid now. Any suggestions??? All the research I have done says the hm282 and nvg-t550 are the same trans, but all the shifting issues come up as a common hm282 issue. Thanks for anyones help.

The getrag is a german transmissions.Gm purchased the patiant and started making them in muncie indiana.I have a HM282 in my 89 3400 gt.I shift over 6 grand a lot and have almost 200xxx miles on it.I just picked up a low miles getrag and rebuilt it and installed a ep lsd.Maybe contact jeff at engineered performance he knows a lot and helped me with rebuilding my trans. He isn't far away from you either.

yeah, Getrag is a german company, they just more or less designed the transaxles and GM produced them(282 anyway, not sure about 284), not anything new, the 5 and 6 speed manual trans as found in 3rd/4th gen F-bodies, corvettes, etc? borg-warner and Tremec.
GM seems to make their own automatics, but manual trans they tend to outsource, couldn't tell you why...

What will really get you confused is how much better a HM282 from a quad 4 car shifts at higher RPM smooth as butter past 7K.
It's all in the synchros, the V6 HM282 should be able to be upgraded but most people don't want to spend the money. Mine was fine up to about 6500, any higher and the synchros wouldn't let the fork move.
