  • 95 Buick Century Tranny issue

Howdy ! Forum newbie here ! JUST got a problem with the trans. I've got a 3.1 V6. Was drving along minding my own business last night, stopped in and got some gas ... must be gold lined or something theses days .... then when pulled out of the station the trans wouldn't hardly shift out of first. Never had slipping or anything.... until now. If I drive as normal it will wind way up then finally shiftafter several seconds, or if I take off pretty fast then back off it will slow down and shift. All other gears seem to shift fine after that. I did try to manually shift it from first, and no difference, also tried to manually start off in second and it actually did the same thing. Any clues from the guru's here?

I'd venture there is something wrong with the 2nd clutch or 2nd clutch circiut itself if all the other gears are fine afterward. If you do a manual select from 1st to 2nd continue be on the throttle and back off, will it shift then? The same as you mentioned when before.

I did the manual shift from first to second and it does shift, but it winds out slipping before it does shift, and manually from 2nd to third shifts fine unless I START off in 2nd ... which definitely surprised me. Unless I start off from dead stop in 2nd manually, 2nd shifts to 3rd just fine with no sliping...... Until I did the manual start in 2nd, second never slipped. I was hoping for a solenoid or sensor kind of fix.

About a week ago the fluid was a little low and I put some Lucas in ..... about a 1/4 pint or so, since someone told me it was great for older trannies. Is it possible this clogged up the filter or something and caused a reduction in pressure? I have had this car for a year, and when cold it has always made a whining noise which dissappears when warmed up. During the winter here I've tried to always give it a good 5 mins to warm up before driving.

        lucas: prince of darkness...

grab some cheap dex-VI, a new trans filter and go nuts.

you may fix your issue with something as simple as routine maintenance.

Thanks will try that. Looks like my Saturday project along with girlfriend's water pump on 98 Explorer.

I've added Lucas to 1 transmission, and it was 1 transmission too many. After I added it (for a better running tranny) it would only go into lock up half of the time. Then half of that time (or 1/4 of the time overall) it would slip when in lockup, causing me to let off and get back on it to avoid burning out my torque converter, at which point it was a crap shoot if it would go back into lockup. I agree with Robert, change the fluid and filter.
