Yes, you'd need the other parts to go with it. I'm not a mechanic, so not pretending to say I know, but the ones you listed are obvious. There is a thread somewhere I saw recently that detailed the entire swap with pics.

The parts I have are mostly body parts for a 92 GTP, the Getrag 284 itself, and a set of 16 x 16.5 rims good for winter use. and some manuals

Well, I won't drag you along. All I can say is I will consider it as I can't make a desicion just yet. But either way I'll know in a week or two tops. If you sell it by then, it was meant to be. If not, who knows.

But if you do sell it, at least post it up for me so I know to remove it from my list of options. That is if you don't mind, thanks.

The 284 was ONLY available in W-bodies, so I would say it will bolt up just fine.

          Ok, will do.

I think your odds are much better with the 284 vs 282, myself, because there are others still around who did it and its worked out well for them.

I love my 284, but the thought of trying to find another if mine takes a dump makes me cry. If I had the money to throw around, I would be jumping on Bob's 284 before you could read this post so I could toss it in the 92 this spring...

Also, yeah, what Brad said. 284 was indeed a W body (with DOHC only, 3.1 or 2.8 got 282s) transmission.

Yeah, I see your point. I just don't want to go searching for a collectors manual trans (costing more) to fix the trans.

Yeah, I wish I had money to toss around freely as well. I happen to have a few grand to invest in my vehicle. Some may consider that money to burn but to me it is an investment.

I am holding out for a steal of a deal. If it goes through I'll have a 2002 GTP 3800 Supercharged Series II, loaded. If not, then the manual swap will proceed. With enough left over to get a more aggressive cam, reinforce the heads for the cam and install a quality water/meth injection system. Possibly work on the suspension, raising the rear a little. I would love in cab hydraulic controlled suspension. Then I can then raise my ride when pulling into the drive way (damn curb loves my fake catalytic) and drop it for 1/4 mile runs.

Ehh, one way or the other, I analyze all my options before I spend a dime. Making sure the route I am taking is the right one.

Can you imagine just how much fun that will be?!?! A 96 3100 Turbo boosted to 10 psi with a manual trans

                turbo +getrag 284 ftw!

(stock minus cam 3.8L+ getrag 284= 584whp last year for me in my 01 grand prix gt)

I settled with a 282. Sorry, I considered it but the price difference was large for just a little more strength. I heard the 282's are still great manual trannies. Plus the guy selling it also made the LSD I had put in....ohhh baby, I'm gonna love smoking up the old tires!!! Two wheel spin FTW!

What I need now is a trans mount for getrag 282 w-body. Or else it's gonna be a DIY'er, ughhh.

                    Best of luck Bob!

do you know a good way to make your own mounts. am gathering stuff to do this in my grand am and i need to figure out how my mounts are gonna work. pretty sure solid mounts would be a bad daily driver.

Kuntzie: Hey, you posted up lots of pics, I remember your name.

                        Good works on the ride!!!

I'm looking for a flywheel for the 3100 sfi v6 that will bolt up right. Anyone have any idea?

ga2001532: Not sure, there are several great tutorials on the web. I spent a day surfing the topic and gathered a lot of info. But I forgot it all, I gave up the custom mount idea.

I was told to use the fly wheel from the car you got the trans, any gm v6 manual fly wheel should work

The flywheel was said to have come from an 88 Grand Prix.......and it will not bolt up to the 3100 crank. Probably a difference between engine generations (2.8 gen II > 3100 gen III) but I can't say for sure...I'm not a seasoned mechanic.

What boggles my mind is the same you said, all GM v6 flywheels will fit. I was reading the same but it is obvious it won't bolt up when placed up. And it is not a matter of spinning the flywheel either (lol) the bolt pattern is 1/8" too large in diameter. It appears the flywheel from a 1999 Sunfire 2.2L will fit the 3100/3400, as my initial research shows.

                            Kuntzie: turbo +getrag 284 ftw!

That is awesome man!! I'm in the 300-350 HP range last I calculated from previous scans w/ the automatic hooked up. But I was trying to NOT break the 4T60e. With that out of the way I might try to work up to 12-15psi range.....but that might be too much. It is built for that kind of boost but I also want longetivity.

You did a great write up.
