Hey 60d people I hope you can help me. I wish to build up, if not the ultimate 60, then damn close, in my opinion it will be a heavily modified LG5 3.1 turbo in a cavalier or other equally light GM vehicle. With that aside my first concern before even going to the drawing board is what manual transaxle/s will bolt and can handle in excess of 300lbft of torque. Thank you and I apreciate any and all input I can get.

Welcome to the site!
Since you mention a Cavalier, I'm going to assume you are staying FWD. So with that said, I would suggest the 282. There have been some mean V8 Fieros built with modified 282 5 speeds. I know the 284's are a great transmission and can take a good amount of punishment, but they are hard to find. My 92 is 1 of about 1,800, and 92 was the year that the most manual Z34's were built... The 282 on the other hand, still has good support from the Fiero community.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

92 Black Lumina Z34 5 speed (getting there, slowly... follow the progress here)
94 Red Ford Ranger 2WD-5 speed

the HM282 has taken north of 400 HP/TQ (closer to 500 ft-lbs) in a Jbody.
If you are going that far make sure to get it rebuilt, if there is any play in the diff bearings it'll walk the diff right out of the trans. Guys are running high 11's in jbodies with the 282, they are very stout if they were taken care of.
