  • World Class T5 Noise?

    I have a 95' Camaro 3.4L w/ a World Class T5.

I've had the car since june and when i bought it syncro's were going out and one finally completely gave up so i bought a used transmission from a junkyard. It was in great condition. Clean shift patterns.

I got it all swapped out. (numbers matched to what they claimed it was).
Since swapping it out i've noticed a lot of ambient gear noise from the transmission. Nothing specific just rotation noise of the transmission .. When the console was apart it was quite a lot louder but even with the 3" flowmaster exhaust on the car the gear noise is still overpowering the exhaust most times.

Any idea what it could be?

wrong fluid will do that, might take syncro mesh.
i'd hold onto the old tranny to rebuild one day.
rebuilding standard trannys isnt as hard as some people make it out to be, just takes patience. i'm sure you could find a video on youtube for dissasembally.

I would have my old tranny for my Ranger if it wasn't for a core charge for this same reason. I know in the 284's in the DOHC W bodies, nothing has let a 284 shift as well as a 284 filled with GM Syncromesh fluid. I think I remember reading that Penzoil is the source for Syncromesh, and has even released it with their own brand name now and it's cheaper than the $10/quart (last time I checked) that dealers want for it.

A T5 takes Dexron. The transmission should be nearly silent if you have stock shifter. The only gear that will make an audible SHHHHHHHHHH noise while driving would be 5th simply because of the cut on the gear. Aftermarket short throw shifters will transmit noise and vibration into the cabin because they do not have rubber isolators.

Lol, manuals taking auto trans fluid... what is this world coming to? The Mazda trans in my Ranger takes the same stuff. I have to mention though, it does keep the inside of them nice and clean.

sometimes trannys are really specific to what manual takes what automatic type transmission fluid, i had that problem in my ranger with the mazda trans.
Tranny fluid is actally a detergent BTW so it will clean, works in the intake of a car, and the oil, i've heard people claiming it will help seal valve seals.

Yeah, I knew about the detergents. I've heard the same thing about not just valve seals, but rubber seals in general. I've also heard you can pour some in the gas tank of a car belonging to someone you don't like and when it smokes like no tomorrow you offer to buy the car cheap because it's about to blow. At least that's what you tell them if they aren't mechanically inclined. Then you run the tank out, refill and enjoy your nice cheap car.
