All cars with the 60v6 came with a manual prior to 94. Between 94 and 2006ish, there were no manuals available. Around 06, a 5-spd became available for a couple of years. More recently (08 ?), a 6-spd has become available. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure if any of the older ones will bolt up to a 3900 w/o an adapter plate. I think they will. I know some of the newer motors (3.6 DOHC comes to mind) don't share the same bellhousing pattern as the typical 60v6.

LOL, patience... the only FWD 60V6 cars that had a manual transmission(i'm thinking of 282s, 284s, and F40s) were early A-bodies, L-bodies, J-bodies, W-bodies, the 2006-2008 G6, if there are more i can't think of them at the moment. the fiero used FWD transaxles as well but obviously is RWD.

now the problem with using transaxles from other platforms is mounting issues, since most platforms used entirely different mounts. the A and W mounts LOOK to be similar/the same, while the J and L look to be either similar or the same, but it would be best to grab a trans from whatever platform you want to deal with to remove additional fab time. the G6 F40 is relatively on it's own since the last 60V6 with a manual trans before it was the 94 3.1 J-bodies.

I wouldn't use it, since its rated for less than a 3100 is rated at in stock form, let alone a 3900.

              Code:
Type: transverse front wheel drive, five-speed manual transaxle
              Engine range: 2.2L - 2.4L DOHC (M86/MG3)
              Maximum engine torque: 155 lb-ft (210 Nm)
              Maximum gearbox torque: 170 lb-ft (230 Nm)

IIRC, GM rates max torque by the beefiest engine it was attached to. not to mention vehicle weight and traction also plays into longevity.

that being said, i'd still avoid it.

ok so the 6 speed that came with the G6 would be best. but what would be 2nd best? everyone wants alot of money 4 the 6 speed.

i wouldn't say that... i've seen the 2006 specific F40 brand-new in box for less than $400 and they're only an hour drive away from me...

the 07-up revision is still expensive as hell though.

2nd best would be the getrag 284 as found in the 91-93 W-bodies equipped with LQ1 motors, but those are also not cheap, not to mention basically unrebuildable.

Every tranny that bolts to the 2.8L will bolt to the 3900, the same for the flywheel although the engine is neutrally balanced. Most F40s I've seen for sale are around $500 shipped in the U.S. and brand new. That's a pretty good deal for that tranny. Anything you can find by Muncie and "Getraggedy" in the latest year possible for these engines should be better than the old Fiero versions standing up behind V8s and 3800s. Stop worrying until you break one.

F40s have been around since about 2003 on the Saab 9-3 which uses a different bellhousing and gear ratios.

Do a nationwide search. Schram Auto up in Michigan has 3 of them, each with 1 mile on them, for $500. There were more for lower prices as well, those ones just stood out. Shipping isn't going to be all that much - figure $150 or so for freight.
