What tools are you looking for specifically? I built my 4t60e without any of the specialty tools.

like a forward clutch spring compress gm# j-23327-1, maybe 1st -2nd and reverse band apply pin gauge gm #j-33382 maybe just enough for a basic overhaul. If you got by without any of this maybe i can to. did you just improvise . i was just kinda going by my book haynes is not the best i guess

You wont need a compressor for the clutch pack, its relatively tame. I also wouldn't worry about the servos all that much.

Yeah you can get by without a compressor... As noted the springs do have pressure on them but not that much. JUST get a good set of circle clip pliers that work in all sorts of different ways. I want to say that's the only necessary tool really.

As noted I did a full overhaul and performance rebuild with standard tools. I made up my own end play loading tool to check install height of the entire assy and such. Its not hard to improvise on most of this, and for a standard refresh if you don't see any major wear on the thrust washers and such then shimming the whole assy typically isn't necessary. I mixed and matched parts from other transmissions so I had to be sure my clearance was correct.

Oh yeah, hose clams work REALLY well as teflon ring resizers

Hell I made my own transmission holder out of my spare engine stand.

Thats a great idea for a transmission stand!

If I ever have some extra money, I'll buy a transmission and tear it apart to see if I feel safe rebuilding one.

ATSG service book FTW! Its a must when you do one of these. I pulled an old busted one apart to learn it but without the book I wouldn't have been able to get everything right.

And yeah that stand works great, most of the build time you need the trans in the upright position so you can stack parts, but since I do not have one tool to hold together the whole input assy I need to drop it sideways and slide that in then twist it back upright again. Works like a charm, I used to do that on two saw horses.... this is a far better method... LOL.

With your idea for the stand I'm really looking into getting a junk tranny now to rebuild it. ATSG does not have a book for the 4T45e but does have a book for the 4T40e. (They say 95-96 models) http://atsg.com/cart/products/4T40E-19-5.html

Would it be safe you think to use this book for a 4T45e?

                          Transmissions are fun... lol

I gotta pull mine this year and get the LSD freshened... other than that I don't have much else to do, maybe I'll open her up to see how everything looks after running my 12's...

transmissions are fun to build ive done 5 they are alot easier than you think. another good company to look at while you got it apart is sommax they have lots of little fixes and stuff for the valve body. also i forget the name atm but there is a company for gm that sells different coefficent of friction clutch discs and bands for faster gear shifts

Looking at a core tomorrow and found a supplier for Raybestos Blue Clutch plates for only 150 bucks for the whole module...cheapest I've ever found.

Would you all recommend replacing steels? I know that you determine if they are worth keeping when you look at em, but for 40 bucks would you say its worth it just to replace them?
