  • Getrag Tranny .. 284/282

    Whats the difference in the Getrag 282 and 284 ? Is the 282 a 4spd ?

  • #2
the 282 is a 5 speed for Cavaliers, I believe it's only supposed to bolt up to the 3.1... I could be wrong though. I think it's just a weaker version of the 284 made for the Cavalier.

The 284 was made for the 3.4 DOHC engine, only used in w-body's, and only used from 91-93. Its so much stronger, uses a pull style clutch, and has gearing meant for a DOHC motor.

The 282 is much smaller (50lbs lighter). It was introduced in the last years of the Fiero, used in the Cavilier and such, was on the w-body for 88-90. The NV5T40 (i think thats its name) that is used today is pretty much a 282.

NV5T40? Never heard of that designation... somehow I don't think the 282 is anything close to the same as the current J-body Getrag 5spd, as it's only rated for 155 ft lbs of torque.

No, the current Getrags are completely different and those were introduced for the 2000? model year...

Anyone know the torque rating for the 282 and 284?

Hmmm, I guess I was mis-informed. I know that the 282 changed names (made by New Venture gears) at sometime.

since we are on the subject of he getrags, i was gonna try to put one in my 91 GP 3.1, so are you implying that i would not want the one out of a cav, that i should try to find on outta a wbody, or would the others work, keep in mind, i got some engine work done...

They are the same tranny. They might have different gear ratios and such, but no major differences. You will also need the W-Body specific tranny mounts (found in the 88-90 Grand Prix and Cutlass).

Someone asked about the torque ratings for the Getrag 284? I've heard 250lbs/ft.

                        HM-282 was made Up to 89? 90?
external slave with slave pivot External to the case

                        91-92 they were NVG 5TM40
external hydraulic slave with the slave pivot point IN the bellhousing

and 93-94 was the NVG T550
                        interenal slave

2000 was the introduction to the New Getrag Transmission, weak buggers. ive seen a few bad mojo's with them. that and the horrid anoying "gear rattle" issue with them too.
IMHO just as lame as the Ishitzu's.

IMHO, the isuzu is a much better trans for an everyday driven car (like one with a 2.2)... they always shift smoother and are quieter... (although they can't handle as much power)

I hate to tell ya'll... and I only know this because I work at a Chrysler dealership as a job.... but the getrag 284 was used in the late 80's in the Chrysler TC by Maseratti behind the 2.2l Turbo II engines. I beleive it was 1989.... i can check my catalogue. I did price one one day, just out of curiosity.... almost 7k! OUCH

86.5 Fiero's w/ 2.8 got the 282 up to 88 when the fiero got killed off. People have done V8 swaps using the stock 282 and not had problems, but they don't dog the crap out of them either.
