  • Transmission availability??

    Hey guys,
Does anyone know what year the "good" gear ratio trannies from the GTZ's where available. My second gear synchro is shot apparently so I'd like to find the better transmission if I'm going to do this anyways.
Also, does anyone know any "alterations" I may have to do? I think it's a direct bolt in but I'd like to be sure.
    Thanks guys
    Franz

you'd have to switch bell housings, the v6 and q4 don't have the same bolt pattern

No problem there....got that already....and a line on two free trannys. But I'd like to do it right...but within budget too.

Hey, I was at the JCO bash, that's my little trick there, if only I could have hooked up I would have shaved another few .1's I am sure...

As was said, you need to swap the bellhousings as well as a few other small brakets and motor mounts.

My trans came from a '92 GTZ and my car is a 91. The pre 1991 cars have a different speedo gear inside them, this must be delt with before the tranny is put back together. I had to re-use my 1991 stuff in the 92 trans.

The gears you are looking for are from any car with the Q4 HO. (GTZ, grand - am, Acheiva) Look at the RPO sheet and you should have "FX1" on there somewhere. This means the lower 3.94 ratio. Must be from 92 - 94 cars only.

Also, have a look here for a bit more info, as well as a little chart I made up to calculate your new gearing.

I had a tranny shop split the cases, because I figured it was a little too involved to try myself... they wanted 200$ cash.

*edit* If you want any more info, lemme know, I was going to attempt to split the cases myslef and found pretty good instructions on how to do it, but for 200$, I took the easy way out.

yeah ive been looking for one for quite some time myself too... there are a few but they're always too pricy..

by the way GM has discontinued those Ring gears and Outputshafts from the 3.94:1 FDR tranys.
