  • Question : 282 hard to shift at high rpm

Hello, This spring i swapped a 282 into my 95 grand prix se 3100. When it's warmed up shifting is like butter under 4000rpm but anything over that is pretty hard. Say I make a full throttle run, it will be really hard to get into second and while holding pressure on the shifter the car will waste a second synchronizing the gear(which makes driving fast worthless). What am I looking at here? A trans rebuild? Are my synchros bad or is this tranny just not good at synchronizing quickly?

Sounds like the input shaft is dragging. Did you replace the pilot? What trans fluid are you using? It's not overfull, is it?

If you ain't rock and roll, you must be driving a Honda

I take very good care of the car, when I swapped it I replaced the clutch, flywheel pilot bearing, axles, slave
any pretty much everything I could. The thing is fine as long as I shift before 4k. I can burn rubber and throw people back in their seat (even with my 3.1). The issue is the higher rpm the longer it takes before the shifter will fall into the gear.

HOWEVER, within the first week of the swap my slave cylinder failed and now it ALWAYS makes a quiet knocking sound unless the clutch in engaged. I assumed it was because the slave somehow damaged the pilot bearing when it blew (because the clutch pedal felt like a rock but I pushed it anyway in fear of not being able to stop). I plan on having the trans rebuilt this winter along with an aluminum flywheel all in efforts to make shifting easier.

Fluid Is not over full, it's right where it should be and it's filled with pens synchromesh.

yeah I originally thought thats why they made the 284 for the dohc(because the 282 doesnt like high rpm). But after talking to some people they said their 282 shifted like butter from 1-2 at high rpm. Whereas mine feels like sometimes im going to bend the shifter and a lot of the time ill miss the gear if i dont hold the clutch in for that extra second. So im assuming mines just screwed somehow. Im going to rebuild it over winter with new synchros, bearings and an lsd. And to make it shift even better im considering a spec clutch with an aluminum flywheel.

Well the 282 has a good drop from 1st to 2nd I beleive so if that is so then you will have a wait alittle to have the transmission sychronize. But also you may want to try bleeding the hydraulic system some more. A hokey way of doing it but still a good way, just pump the clutch about 100 times with the cap off.

              that actually works?

hell, why bother grabbing tools then? probably a lot quicker.

I bleed mine (284, but should be the same concept) by pulling the slave and pressing the rod against something hard to shove it back in the slave, but doing it at a lower level than what the master is at since air rises.

the HM282 has a max recommended input RPM of 6200, if the synchros are worn out then you will have these issues. My 1-2 shift was hell after a few seasons of racing, it's fine under 6K though. 2-3 and 3-4 are fine at 7K.

                  Time for a rebuild.
