  • 4t60e dead, have 4t65e-hd lying around... should I swap?

I've got a 94 Grand Prix GT 3.4L DOHC with a 4T60E that recently died. Won't shift out of first or go into reverse and reverse makes rattling noises Car is mostly stock performance-wise and will stay within 10-15% of stock rating while I own it.

I have a 4T65E-HD with 100k lying around and I wonder if I should put it in. Has anyone actually successfully done that before? I am worried not about making it fit, but about properly controlling the tranny. I read that ZZP is working on a tranny computer, but who knows when that will be done.

I'm looking for some advice from yall about what I should do. Rebuilding the 4T60E is too difficult for me to do myself and I don't know anyone in my area of Blacksburg, VA who has a good reputation for tranny work.

Should I put the 4T65E-HD in? Should I find a junker with a 4t60e and hope its tranny is good? Should I suck it up and buy a reman?

    Please advise!

    Thanks,
    Jad

This what you are looking for? http://www.granatellimotorsports.com/transtuner.htm My tranny is trashed also. In the shop now. I got lucky, the guy is a friend. Transtuner will be my first purchase after it comes back. (hate it when I mispell)
If you are driving a Chevy, everything else, is just a blur. 3.4 Carbon Footprint.

I'm 99% sure that the 65E would NOT go directly in (there are wiring differences). IIRC, there was a thread here on it. Try searching for it.

I'm also fairly sure it doesn't wire up the same, but I'm willing to do a little bit of work if someone's proven the concept. When it comes to PWM solenoid control and stuff, my experience is extremely limited.

The transtuner is for adjusting existing signal I believe. I don't think it can independently control a transmission.

        Thanks,
        Jad

          Just speaking electrically:

-The 60e range switch should hook up alright, if not the 65e uses a similar or same one.
-your 60e has a on/off TCC solonoid and a PWM modulator solonoid that controls pressure to the TCC solonoid. The 65e has a single PWM TCC solonoid. It should work by hooking up the 60e TCC wiring to the 65e PWM TCC solonoid, it will be a bit harsher and the PCM will probably thow a bit of a fit over tranny slipage and such.
-the 65e has an electronic pressure control, 60e has a vacuum. Only way to hook it up to the stock PCM is to do a good deal of assembly programming (using the 60e PWM line). Otherwise you need to build a circuit that outputs a PWM signal or the tranny will be suck in full pressure all the time.

I think I may be better off just throwing an L67 in. I do not trust myself to be the first to do this. I would probably end up destroying the tranny with incorrect pressure signals and then I would be back at square one.

So I will probably put the 3.4L DOHC 110k and broken 4T60E up for sale soon.

brian89gp, thanks for fielding the technical side.

I think it was said in the old thread the the 65e was wider too.

The 4t65-e will bolt on to the 3.4 however you will need the bigger axles married to your half-shafts...
The electronics might be an issue, however I am thinking out loud...why can't he use a PCM for a '97.5 or '98-'99...didn't the 3.4 mate to a 65-e later on?
