Question : 96 GPse 3100 SFI - Manual Trans Swap

1996 Grand Prix se 3100 sfi w/ turbo

I am considering putting in a manual trans but don't know what type will work.

What is the best Manual Trans for high torque/hp that will fit w/o extreme modifications?

Will the trans drop out from under the frame instead of having to remove the block?

Are there any costly complications in doing such a swap?

I really love manuals over autos and I am getting sick of my 4T60-e. My auto trans is in great shape and low miles so it would be sellable to recover swap costs. Also, if anyone has done this before a brief idea of time involved would be nice.

I'm going to write up a plan and expense list to see if it is feasable before winter creeps up this year. Man, I would be so happy to have a manual!

easiest intall? 282 or 284... i'd personally go with a 282 just due to not being able to get any kind of replacement parts for the 284...

and there are proven LSDs and clutches for 282s... luckily, you still have the 1st gen W firewall plate, so it should all be fairly easy to integrate.

As far as install, raise the car on a decent height jack stands, drain and drop the auto, drag it out through the drivers wheel well. Lift the 282 in place, bolt up. Is that correct? It's that easy? Or am I missing something, besides clutch pedal, shifter, trans fluid lines and PCM wiring mods?

Also, do I have to remove the dash to install the clutch or is there a trick I don't know of? The shifter shouldn't be too hard. Remove the seats then onto the shifter?

Better yet, if you guys know of a write up somewhere that would be fantastic!

there was something on w-body at one time, but i can't find it now...

and you'll need to remove the flexplate and TC for the flywheel and clutch, "little" stuff like that... assuming you get a 282 from a 88-90 W-body w/2.8 or 3.1, it is MUCH simpler than having to fab mounts for the other 282s...
