  • 93 Lumina Tranny Auto

Hello. I currently have a 93 Lumina with a 4 speed auto... I changed my oil and filter about 10k ago and its black again. I have been having issues with it lately.... when car is in park, and if i give it gas (2000) rpms.. it will make a clanking noise....and i notice the speedometer will go up a lil but (10mph or so) and when i let off. it will go down and clanking will stop... it also seems to have power if i switch into netural while car is moving. if i accelerate while in netural it still makes the car go a little bit... ive noticed the switching of gears has gotten a lil worse lately also. especially reverse to drive. makes a clunking noise that has gotten harsher.

    Any suggestions ?

What kind of tranny is it? I'm guessing a 4T60-E, not just a standard 4T60. But if its the 4T60, I have a 4T60-HD sitting here looking for a home. It might need rebuilding (have yet to crack it open), but it'll probably be cheaper than anything else you'll find.

Wasnt the 4T60 dropped in 93 in favor of the -E?

I have heard that the DOHC got a HD trans already. Thats hearsay but worth looking for facts. Did a caddy ever get the 4T60-E?

I know that the HD has extra clutch plates, when I tear mine apart I'll count them up.

Didn't the HD have a thicker chain than the regular 4T60-E or am I thinking about something else?

it sounds like you have a bad set of planetaries maybe and your forward clutch pack has gotten so hot and burned up the cltches that they have warped and have gotten jammed together also a common problem with those is to breack the "stove pipe" which connects two clutch packs together to bypass anoter and its just stamped steel sheetmetal
