  • Semi-Automatic Shifter for 4t60e???

I am interested installing a semi-automatic shifter for my 96 GP. Is there such an item for my vehicle or would I have to modify an existing unit for another vehicle?

It seems simple at first but I'm sure it can get easily complicated. I would love to have a manual up/down paddle rigged to operate by switch.

Basically splicing in the wires so I can give PCM control or the manual shifter paddle by switch.

    Any advise?

    Thanks guys

Forward gears are controlled by 2 solenoid valves. 1st is on/on, 2nd is off/on, 3rd is off/off, and 4th is on/off. It's just a matter of finding a circuit that can trigger them in the right order based on two inputs (gear up, gear down). Then a selector switch (DPDT?) to change from manual to PCM control. Reverse is hydraulically actuated and requires physical input from the shift knob and TCC control changes from year to year and usually involves pulse-width modulation.

Somebody made one... I can't remember who it was or what website it was listed on, but I know it has been done. You also need to realize what position you will want the manual valve in when you set this up... Just be aware that in OD the trans will let the car coast when throttle is removed, yet in Drive, or 2 (aka L for some cars) and 1 where available, the trans stays engaged when the throttle is removed. That function is done hydraulically and I'm not sure what position can be used if you wish to use all 4 gears.

I can post up the chart that shows whats engaged with what you have selected and what gear its in if you want it.

Wasnt it ASG Indy (the company that did the 5.0L swap). it wired inline with the transmission harness and whatever gear your shifter (gear selector) was in is what gear it held... You can also change the settings if your OBDII to so the same. paddle shifters are over rated IMO (i work at lexus and a couple cars have them... fun for about 2 min), the charm wears off.

Brian89gp had done one for his 95(?) GTP before going turbo on it. He had it controlling pressure and everything with a programmable microprocessor. Then he started editing the actual code for his LQ1 to get it to run boost- not just changing settings like chip tuning. That man was one smart cookie, but seems to have fallen off the face of the internet as far as 60v6's go

That would not be for a 60E then... Pressure is controlled by Vac in those transmissions. So he may have done a 65e swap and rather than buy a controller he made his own, which makes sense probably a cheaper route.

Right, right... I don't recall him doing a 65 swap, so maybe his was a 97 GTP, which would have gotten the 65E already. I don't remember what transmission he had, I only know for a fact it was a factory auto bolted to his LQ1 and he had built this thing that he could have made paddles for to make it F1 style shifting. It had a display showing what gear he was in and everything and I think he had toyed with the idea of modifying his shifter and installing a couple micro switches on it to make it sort of like the Manumatics. He was around the time of when EFI street had a forum and when our 60v6 meet was in Canada.

Thanks guys, I think I'de rather drop in a manual trans instead of designing a paddle shifter. It was a neaty idea but the time, effort and money involved I'de rather put that towards a strong manual. I love stick shifts with turbos.......better pull, greater control and more of that bad ass Psshhhh!
