That would be quite an interesting and cool idea to try. Hmm. I do have a spare 284 once I part the 91 out... That might be worth a try since some people have managed to find another source besides Getrag for some parts like synchros...

We are currently thinking of incorporating a full throttle gear shift system to our racing transmission. The system detects when a shift is about to be made and cuts the spark to the engine during the shift. The idea is that the clutch isn't used during up-shifts and shift time can be reduced to...

"Ken, full power shifts were being made with modified gearboxes even in the early 60's. We took every other 'tooth' off the gear synchro gears and ground ever other 'spline' out of the synchro hub, deleted the synchro rings (clutches) for a drag racing T-10 ! You never(sometimes I would lift bit, depending on how close the race) lifted your foot from the accelerator pedal and just 'reefed' on the T handle for the next gear...hard on gearboxes? I would imagine so...we really did not care as long as it was quicker. I had a 283 Vette and shifted at 7000 so my guess is there was ~1500/2000 rpm spread---Oddly, I never broke a box or the 4.56 final drive in three years of drag racing. I still remember my best time...12.27 @ 105.57 in 1963. Ahhhhh, the 'good ole days' before I knew how much this hobby/addiction was going to cost.If you can find the Hotrod Mag article from 59/60 or so from their archives...that's where I got the idea back then."

Some may be rationalizing that they can float their car's transmission, but that could lead to significant damage. You can float the gears in a...

"A bit of trivia... an old racer's trick is to grind every other tooth off the synchro's--makes the tranny easier to speed shift (full throttle)."

anyone ever heard of grinding every other tooth of of the tranny gears to make a dog box

      lots of references there...

Case in point. Any grinding is bad. 1. it means synchros aren't keeping up with how fast you want to shift and 2. it also means you are eating your gears alive. I hope you at least change the fluid in that poor unit from time to time. I wouldn't even think about doing that to my 284. Not just because of how scarce they are and how expensive they are to repair, but because I don't feel like getting stranded on the side of the road some place.
This trans has seen like 5 fluid changes in the last 8k miles with pennzoil syncromesh. Other things usually break first.

It has bad bearings that I cant replace so well see how much longer it keeps turning.
