  • Illustrated 4T65E rebuild

Before I found this site, I was looking around for what I could find on the 4T65E transmission. Turns out there's a great illustrated sequence over at the Bonneville forum:

Mon Apr 28, 2008 Bought a 102k mile 1998 4T65E-HD out of a Regal GS from local Craigslist. Seller is a 50-ish high school auto ...

But it wasn't clear to me that the bushings could be replaced separately. This guy did so:

But still had some difficulty. At some point I may end up trying such a thing, I wonder how putting the bushings in a cooler along with some dry ice before hand and warming the steel component to 270 or 300 degrees would ease assembly?

But if one is just interested in how whether you can replace the solenoids without pulling the trans, this site shows how. (Link hasn't worked for me but it gets you close, then look for the step-by-step drop down in the Twisted Tech category. From there you search for GM 4T65E solenoid shift valve replacement TCC/PWM EPC 1-2 2-3)

Hope that adds to your web surfing enjoyment.

Bushings should be easy without heating/cooling, they are very similar to a 4t60e and I used a 3 ton press and some pressing tools to get them in. They went in very easily. Keeping the thin ones straight was the hardest thing on the 2nd drum but that was about it.

Nifty thread though. I've done all of this in my old 4t60e, and I'm going one stage further and doing the Stage1 clutches in my current 4t60e in my car below... Those should bump my performance a bit... since I did burn the input ones, and the manual band.

Well I'm just wondering if I can swing it with the temp difference trick. This is a very backyard-tech attempt and locating a good set of pressing tools for vary rare use may be a project killer.

most of the bushings just need to be pressed in flush, so if you use a slightly oversized aluminum pipe, or rod then you can press them in. Thats mainly what I used.
