  • 4T60E 5 pin to 7 pin conversion.

    It turns out all the schematics I came across are inconsistent with eachother. I took the sidecover off and removed the harness. My 5 pin is equipped with the 2nd gear start as well. I don't really need it, so if its easier to delete it thats fine. I have the TCC solenoid, and 3 pressure switches, according to my 93 harness schematic the original 93 had 3 solenoids and 2 pressure switches. So the issue here is, is it even gonna work? I already know which wire color combo controls which solenoid/switch on my tranny. I just need to know which wires from my 7 pin harness to attach to each one...if possible.



    Also on these, is following the ECM diagram according to A,B,C...terminals correct for all 4t60Es? If I were to assume E is ignition all the time? A solenoid A, B solenoid B? or does it vary with production?

    you do realize you are comparing a 4t60 to a 4t60-E, right?

        Actually I just caught that as well. I was under the assumption E was electronic...therefore if it has the plug...its an E...so my stock 92 tranny isn't an E? ( I never did look at the pan) The wiring in the first diagram that states 4T60 is the exact same as mine, with the manual kickdown linkage. Well lets assume its not an E. Can I make this thing work? Otherwise its gonna get the whole car harness, which I don't really want to do.

          The E stands for "electronically assisted". Most automatic transmissions in the 80s and 90s had a plug of some sort on it for one reason or another, (solenoids mostly). That doesn't mean they were electronically controlled or interacted with the ECM like modern automatics do. The "E" is what allows you to "manually" move the shifter into other drive gears while engaged without getting the loud "bang" that older simple hydraulic automatic transmissions would have produced. It gives the driver more control (although most aren't aware of it, or never bother attempting to experiment with it).

          To address your question: What advantages (if any) are you attempting to gain by using a 4t60-e in a 93? The reason I ask is, it's going to be more work in the long run swapping harnesses, tuning/programming, and getting your ECM to interract with the newer transmission than it may be worth to you. Why not just upgrade the internals or rebuild your existing "non-e" transmission and leave it in?

            He doesn't have one of the transmissions (can't remember which, but I think its the older one).

              ixion and brad: the -E tells us it uses shift solenoids and ECU determined shift points. most transmissions since 1982 have had a TCC solenoid, but that doesn't make the -E, it's the shift solenoids that determine that. transmissions for W's went like this:

              3.1 didn't get 4t60-e until 1993
              3.4 got them in 1991

              therfore, his 93 cutlass 3.1 came with a 4t60-e and he has a 92 cutlass 3.1 4t60 that he has availible to swap in.

                    I got the 92 computer on the 93 harness and 4 of the 5 pins are in the same location so all I have to do is splice my connector onto the proper color wire...the 5th wire is what gets me. Its the PURPLE, goes straight to the bulkhead on the firewall, then the 93 harness had a DK BLUE coming from the blue ecm connector that goes in the bulkhead 1 space over from my PURPLE on the other harness....I couldn't find a wiring diagram to show me the bulkhead pin breakdown, but the 93ECM Blue connector Pin out states "Transaxle Mode Switch (4T60E) So could this possibly be my Brake Switch on both trans? Because I do believe you need to depress the brake to shift these out of park. And now it kinda makes sense the 93 had it from the ECM because its controlled with shift solenoids and the 92 went straight to the connector on the tranny because its not. And to answer why I am putting old shit in a newer car is because I have it available and its cheap. All 3 cars 1993 sunbird, 1992 Cutlass and 1993, only cost me $600 with all the parts I already put into the motor, and all 3 have clean titles. I got all the wires in, time to drop it in and see what happens.

                        Car works great, shifts fine, idles rough....I used the 92 computer 93 modified harness and 92 engine and trans. Should I use the 93 EEPROM for the 93 car? or shouldn't this matter? I know it idled just fine when it was in the 92.

                          the 93 PROM is set up for $DF while the 92 is set up for $A1. you need the 92 PROM in or else you'll be in a world of trouble... might just need to do an idle relarn and it might smooth out.

                            Ok, well thats how it is, the 92 computer and PROM, the 92 motor and trans and the 93 modified harness. I also got the idle fixed....simple beginners error, always double check the firing order. I swapped 2 and 6....must have been late. All good now...I do have check gauges light and the oil pressure gauge doesn't work. I am sure thats just a faulty sensor. Thanks for all the help, it runs and shifts strong.
