  • Throttle valve adjustment? aaak! 1989 Gran Prix 2.8L

    I just purchased and installed a remanufactured 440T4 and it came with a new torque converter. I am experiencing what feels like clutch slippage when around 2000 rpm. (transmission shudders)...

    anyway, I think it is the TV cable that needs adjusted but the manual I have (haynes) seems useless as it was in removing the transmission.

    I cant seem to find any adjustment on the bracket where the cable mounts... also the vacume modulator is not adjustable that I can tell but is smaller in size than the old one on the old trans...If anyone has experience with this I would appreciate any help!!!!!
    How fast can we take this turn?

    My Haynes manual shows this adjustment precise and clear. Easy to read and good pics of the tab you push to adjust it. But really it's been the same for years. Press the release tab on the TV cable. (Metal tab on side) Push the slider through the fitting as far as it will go. Hold throttle at WOT. (engine off of course). You will hear an audible "click". Release TV tab. Your TV cable is now adjusted. But that should not cause a shudder in the tranny. Maybe got a lemon rebuild, or a bad Tq C. Shudder usually indicates torque converter or clutch pack problems. Not shift points.
    If you are driving a Chevy, everything else, is just a blur. 3.4 Carbon Footprint.

      Thanks for the reply, but my adjuster looks a little different than the one in Haynes manual. Do you mean the two plastic tabs that stop the cable from coming out of the mount?

      Mine has a spring loaded square piece on it's top that will allow the slider to go to the left (facing the front of the car). If ya think of anything else, lemme know. THanks again!

        C is the tab you have to push. If you don't see this, then you are not dealing with a TV cable.

          Ok, not to beat this to death, but...my TV cable comes out of the R.side of trans.
          goes up to a mounting point near the throttle body and throttle mechanism. Instead of having the tab (as in 3.8 C shown) there is a square, very stiff spring loaded mechanism that allows the slider(beside A in the diagram) to go back inside the adjuster. . .

          After I did the adjustment as described, performance was a little better but I still experience a shuddering when the car shifts up to 4th gear and the rpm is around 2 grand. There is also a gear sound that is evident in all ranges including neutral. Thanks again very much for your effort to answer my question and your time...late
          P.S. feel free to offer any more suggestions! :}
