Yeah I'm thinking they are only 96 versions of the 60e that were HD.

I'd like to think you can make it work, amuch later model gear box will have all the latest hard parts. My main concern is the 3rd and input diodes which I think is actually a racheting device now and not a sprag.
The LS4 4T65-E HD I know has even more done to it than a 3800SC gear box.Lorenzo

Yeah, the 65-E got all kinds of different things in the later years. The LS4 one has cryo treated internals I think....
But anyway back to the 4T60-E, Lorenzo, do you know if the 99 60-E ever got the hardened 4th clutch hub and reverse reaction shell, or do those still need upgrading with hardened aftermarket ones?
Amazingly my original 94 trans has not blown up yet with well over 220,xxx miles but it does feel like it's not grabbing like it used to. I don't drive it easy either.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

I would venture to say no they didnt but the aftermarket is to the rescue with a stronger 4T60-E hub. Also I do not think you can use a 4T65E 4th hub in a 4T60-E but I could be wrong. I guess if you used the input sun and if the channel plate and side cover had similar dimensions it would work then... I know the hub itself is different

There are some interchange parts, but not many. I know Jeff at EP does a Hybrid setup, BUT he has to machine the 3rd clutch drum to fit in there and do some other stuff... Not sure what else, but I guess he can build one tough 60e using some 65e parts.

Does the 65 use bigger/more clutch packs?

I would like to think the amount of clutches is the same... not for nothing, its not the clutches that are issue. All the current failures are pretty much to the left of the rotating assembly. Older issues were the reaction drum, aka stove pipe, that part is way too soft. Early 4th clutch hubs, 3rd roller clutch, and the 2nd clutch drum thrust washer....which was thoughtfully made out of plastic.... I would focus on raising the line pressure and getting a stronger oil pump shaft and bearing.Lorenzo
