  • Getrag 282 Q4 with V6 housing

Well i have come across a deal a free Q4 282... It is out of a 93 beretta.. What gains am i looking for swapping this into my TGP? Remember i already have a 89 2.8 282 in it now and i read up on something about the Q4 282 having different gears.. is it to any of my benefit? I know i need to swap the bellhousings over and that about it.. is the 93 Q4 a internal or external slave?

93 and 94 are nvg282's and internal slave trannys. i would sell it and buy a regular 282 and still prob make some money. idk about the gears i know they are diffrent

the quad 4 trannies were still made by Getrag/Muncie, not at NVG like the V6 version.

It is internal slave and depending on if the Q4 was a W41 or a regular quad the 5th might really suck. I had a 93 W41 trans in mine, turning 3K RPM in 5th @ 65 MPH was not good for gas mileage, i didn't have to down shift to pass anyone though.

        Here are some ratio comparisons..

*edit, not sure why they are showing up so small when you click on them. I'll put them on my server tonight and link to them.

*edit 2, fixed.. the site was converting .gif images to .jpg.. weird..

You might want to get your rotating assembly balanced really well if your going to hold it in 1st until 65mph

we don't need RPM's to make power though, we have torque on our side.

There are several w-bodies in the video.

Wow, to each his own, but you won't catch me in any of those cars (unless I am gagged and tied up in the trunk).

Not only would the bellhousing need to be swapped for a V6 one, but the case won't bolt into a W-body either. Only W-body Getrags have the mounting bosses to be mounted in W-bodies.

Not sure if the FDR would be 3.61 or 3.94, but the differential should be the newer design (beefier). Other than that, only 4th and 5th should be different, gear wise. 4th: 1.03 vs 0.94 in the '89, 5th: 0.81 vs 0.74 in the '89. Certainly wouldn't be helping out your highway mileage.

The bellhousing swap is easy, you need a couple allen keys, and a 13mm socket and ratchet, then some LOCTITE flange sealant.

How to dissasemble the trans :

It doesn't take long at all and you can take advantage of the lower gearing.

The 1.03 4th gear is nice for racing.

As far as the mouning bosses go, they are all the same, with the exception of if you have one of the cast alum. intermediate shaft housings, instead of a hanger bearing type intermediate shaft, in that case you'll need to drill and tap the holes in there, not a huge deal.

If I were you, and if you beat your car up at times, get it for a spare anyways.

The slave obvioulsy don't matter cause you keep the V6 half of the trans. Only thing is you mught also have to swap VSS wheels. Again, not a big deal.

man, i wish i had known about the loctite flange sealant before.. i used the gray RTV stuff again and it's already dripping after a couple days.

idk about the mounting bosses being the same because i thought that and wen i bought a hm282 i assumed the case would be the same as a q4 because the q4 bolts right into my j-body but turns out the q4 case and the v6 case have atleast one diffranc idk wat bosses u need but i know the one i needed is only on the q4 case.
