  • Finally, a cheap 284 rebuild!!!

I recently went to a long time clutch tranny shop and had thenm look at my car. As we know, I fucked up my second gear a while back. EH said assuming all it needs is synchros and a couple other things, his estimate was 500-1000. This is really cheap. I hope to have this done smooth. He said the tranny is bulletproof, but when you do what I did to it, no tranny will hold up. I will see how this goes and if it actually stays in this range. BTW 500-1000 is without a new clutch(mine is already new), and doesn't include the removal and replacement of the tranny.

I really doubt that the trans shop is aware that NO PARTS ARE AVAILABLE.

$20 says he can't get parts. There are a lot of people who can't believe that GM doesn't provide parts support for these transmissions, but it is true.

Well after a couple months with no phone call, I called him. He said that he had forgotten, and will get the estimate soon.

I told him not to bother, he wouldn't find anything.

My guess-He checked, but after realizing he couldn't find the "factory equivalent" parts he promised me, he decided not to call.

Try contacting Getrag of North America or DANA INC, there are some fabricators out there and it is a shame no ones know poo about it.

Last time my Tranny got rebuilt it was by getrag and I think it was shipped to Detroit.

I say, this guy if he could find used parts would have fix it and may even swapped more used stuff than what was in the original tranny

Believe it or not a majority of the 284 parts are expensive even used.

I even put a want ad in the paper for a Getrag 284 and got one response and he wanted to much for some new parts.

well if its just a synchro and gear rebuild, sounds easy.... its all of the other parts that you cant just order by size like you can synchros and gears...

              BTW- this is Travis (soccrplayrgtp)
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

It SHOULD be just synchros and gears...

I don't know about the gears...but you could try to use syncros from other trans. Thats what I did to an Ford Taurus SHO trans. The thing has cavilar lined syncros...but the shops wanted $200 for just syncros...so I took some old trannies we had and found that Tempo 5sd syncros fit...but were just brass..but still worked to 7K rpm.

Maybe someone here who distroyed their 284 can sell you thier syncros..or gears...or maybe compare 282/284 internal parts.

If I had to play the guessing game I would check out BMW and the newer RWD Mustang/Corvette transmissions. If anything thats where Getrag would have probably shared them.
