  • Question : a 4t65 swap from a 4t45?

    Does anybody know how hard it will be to swap my gagt's 3.4 and 4t45 out for a 3.8 and a 4t65? money is not an issue but i am going to be doing this myself and any info about dimensions and tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated.

        swapping out for a 4t65e, probably not a bad idea, but if you're going through the trouble, you might as well get a 4t80e and never worry about it blowing up. the DOHC3.5 uses the 4t80e bellhousing pattern right?

        swapping in a 3.8: GTFO and join ClubGP.

            no this aint no joke im just some kid who wants a tougher tranny in my ga there s not much out there to really beef up a 4t45...

              ask a junkyard... a 4t80e is the strongest auto FWD tranny gm has built(not sure what the 6 speed will do though), which is why it got hooked up to the northstars, anything with a NS *should* have a 4t80e

                  i stand corrected, the LX5 never came with a 4t80e, it came with the 4t65e.

                  the six speed is the auto that came out pretty recently in the malibu and a couple other cars...

                  its the 6t70 and 6t75...(look it up on wikipedia if you want)

                  you know what, forget about the 4t80, just get the six speed if you can find/afford it, you'll have a hell of a time trying to hook a 4t80 up to any V6... i'm assuming you have some wiring skills and know someone who could tune it? because that WOULD be necessary seeing how it has 2 extra gears...

                  someone with more obd2 knowledge needs to chime in

                    The stock computer in a grand am will not be able to control a 6 speed trans. Most of the newer GM vehicles now have a separate trans control unit.

                    I would go with a 3500 mated to a 4t65e.... wait that is the route I am going.

                      nice, ya i could get a hold of a 3500 pretty easily. who much computer work do ya think a guy would have to do to get it up and running?

                          i agree that someone with some obd2 knowledge needs to tune in.
                          should go well...i hope now i just have to wait for that 4t45 to blow up (its barely hanging on, shouldnt be long)

                            The tuning part isn't hard.... but then again takes the right equipment, research and knowledge.

                            Honestly, if the car is your daily driver, a trans swap is not going to happen until a kit comes out... which hopefully won't be too much longer. The swap takes computer tuning, custom mounts and axles.

                              i still got the factory GAGT chip. could i clear the MAF sensor myself? i have a stage 3 cold air kit from k&N and want it at its full potential.
