  • need to know camaro trans length

im trying to decide which transmission im going to go with in my 90 rx swap & i want 5 speed rwd, im looking to go for a lot more power in the long run so do you guys think if i find a 350 camaro 5 speed trans & put a v6 bellhousing on it, will this be able to take a good deal of power and also for any of you guys running this transmission or a v6 camaro trans if its out of your vehicle cam you please measure it from bellhousing to spline & let me know so i can figure if theres any way i can use the stock driveshaft (which id really like to do) as long as i have good sturdy trans & engine mounts welded up for it-i am going to get it tomorrow afternoon or evening & then i can start measuring stuff & getting the trans on craigslist for trade or sale to comp whatll take to get a 5 speed (or atleast for the most part) especially after ive stripped the GTP's wiring for the rx7 & part the GTP out to pay for my tranny

anyone who has their trans out please, if you get a min, can you measure it for me?

Unless your making something that has NO low end power and a limited power band like a race engine, the V8 T5 gear ratios will actually take away from the use of the Complete power band that the 60 degree V6 engine produces.

In the MGB which has a stock 3.909 to 1 rear end gear, the V8 T5 makes an ideal 1st gear and ideal 5th gear but not as ideal everywhere else and limits the full use of the RPM range. You shift quicker and more often than needed. Maybe with your setup, your planning a 3.73 or 4.11 rear end in which case, a closer ratio and that HEAVY weight o the stock Camaro (3200-3600 lbs) might on the outside chance be a good choice. I prefer the V6 T5 with around a 3.4 ratio rear end, but then again, I am running smaller wheel/tire combo AND my car with a full tank of fuel sits at 2,250 lbs- at least 1,000 less than a dry Camaro of most of the 1980's and 90's.

Back to the original issue- the V6 and V8 T5 out of Camaros and Firebirds are all the same externally with the exception of the number of splines on the input shaft, otherwise identical from 1983-1992. The 3.4L uses different components and to keep with the KISS theory, use only 83-92 gearbox parts for your car.

I'm no Camaro expert, but I recommend checking out the difference in the crossmembers AND driveshaft between an auto car and a manual. These are probably different, but thats for the F-body websites to tell you.

I doubt anyone else will give you the same info. Everyone just thinks you have to have something and cannot break from that mindset. The V8 T5 is one of those mindsets that people entrap themselves into.
