  • 09 cobalt ss trans

long story short, i just found out that the 09 cobalt ss turbos (2.0L) have the gear style LSD. i would love a modern tranny and i had a thought

is this like the quad4 trannys where u can swap the belhousing and bolt to a 60*? or maybe steal the diff? i figure its a longshot but couldnt hurt to see if any1 happens to know. i have no idea of its a totally different animal or just another updated trans

4.05:1? damn thats a short final gear...

or is that the HHR only? i imagine the cobalt would get a more streetable final drive...
1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

I actually copied that off of the Cobalt spec info, so not sure why it only lists the HHR...

The Cobalt SS and Saturn Redline get the 5 speed from the Saab cars which the 6 spd F40 used on the 06-07 G6 originated on. The non boosted models get the Muncie 5 spd. You will not be able to swap bellhousings with anything else to my knowledge due to the transmission being a Saab part used on an American vehicle. It's stronger than the Muncie so it was placed on the boosted versions of those two cars.

The F40 6 spd is not a Muncie tranny, although GM did make the alternative 60 deg bellhousing for it.

i think that tranny has horrible ratios. 1-2 difference is like my auto, then why bother with having 4th gear? 3,4, and 5 are so close together. all that torque, why not actually give it a real OD? it's also already at it's max torque capacity.

with past gearbox TQ ratings, and given the output of the engine, i find it hard to believe that tranny will operate w/o problems for a very long time. i've never known a FWD GM tranny that had problems.
