  • 95 gran prix trans

    pickling up a 95 granprix
i have to do some engine work to it but i was wondering what transmission it would have in it so i could see how much i can do to it before i get to the point were its gonna be breaking the transmissions

right now i have to either replace a headgasket or intake gasket. while i was in there i was thinking of doing cam/p[orting the heads/intake

and down the road adding in a turbo

its an automatic car and i noticed a 2nd gear takeoff button on the left side of the dash

well for a turbo the stock PCM won't be enough.

and what exactly are you asking? how much power before you break the tranny? having sticky tires will be a very bad idea, due to when they grip that well, it seems to blow up the final drive(i think thats what goes out first) and then you're fucked.

yeah im just wondering how much power the trans can hold before it starts eating itself up.

im gonna keep this build really simple,

since i have to do headgasket/ or intake gasket right off the bat, im going to
port the heads, decent sized cam but im going to leave it boost friendly for if i go that way down the road.

other then that ill prolly go threw the bottom end real fast, hone job new rings/ rod bearings, shime the oil pump pressure valve a tiny bit and tyhats abou tit

i want this to be reliable so im not looking to really push it all out, just enough that its fun but yet still reliable enough

and if the turbo does get put on im deff going to go with the megasquirt standalone again

Stock automatic is a 4T60-E... I have a stock trans in my 95 monte and its handling the power just fine... Im running 7psi. Ofcourse at sea level it will be a bit harder on the trans then in colorado 5000ft. you can rebuild it with rebestos clutch packs i hear they are stronger.. OR you could run a 4T65-E HD from a 1997+ GTP grand prix but you will need to run a OBDII harness and a ECU from a car with a 4T65 trans. If your going turbo that is the better option... the 4T65-E HD is a stronger trans and has more aftermarket parts as well as the tuning ability with the OBDII.

define tuning ability. 4t60e you can change shift points and such, the only thing i think you can't do anything with is changing line pressure through the PCM

yes, changing shift points and pressure on the 65-e trans... But also tuning for the turbo in general. Fuel, Spark, injectors, ect..... It would be a all in one upgrade.

BTW im making 290hp/270tq to the wheels on my 60-E (~340hp/320tq at the flywheel assuming a ~15% drivetrain loss). TimG is making 325hp/350tq on his rebuilt (rebestos) 60-E. i think he is going to swap out his for a 65-E HD sooner or later.

It'll hold fine, just refrain from the one wheel burnouts aka peglegging. If you dont plan on rebuilding it, you would be advised to shimm the accumulators and get an adjustable vaccum modulator.

does the one wheeled burnouts hurt the trans?

i know in some of the older saturns spining the one tire would cause the locking pin in the diferential to back off alowig the pic holding the 2 spider gears in place to come free and it would eventually come threw threw the case.

does this trans have the same type of issue?
and is there any available limited slip units available for the trans?

yes the one wheeled burnout will kill the tranny, and someone made LSDs for them but i cant find the information, i was interested in them myself but i'm not putting any more money into an automatic... i'll just get a LSD for a 282.

"EP" makes the LSD's i think its engineered performance.. dunno if anyone else does or how good these are but i see a few people here running the EP LSD.

i'd have to wonder if these are any good.

and berettas used 4t60e right? any other reason why this might not work with a GP?

ill stick with the peglegger, if its an issue of the spider gear pin like it wa sin my old saturn ill just weld the pin to the carrier and be done with it.

im pretty sure the car will get a 5 pseed swap down the road anyway

I used to run that years ago. Definately did the job once I learned how to use it.
