  • if i switch to 5 speed can i keep my driveshaft?

93 3.4 camaro-want to put 5 speed out of an old 2.8 camaro or firebird in place of the 700r4 thats in it now.

the engine & trans are controlled seperately, so im not worried about that. will the auto's driveshaft be of sufficient length, though?

sorry to post a thread but ive went thru a few dozen threads & have had no luck-ive learned a bit about the FWD trannies though

I dont know if the driveshaft is the same length but it possibly is.

For the use of an older 2.8L V6 T5, you need the bellhousing from the same car. The only issue you may have is connecting the stock master cylinder but I suspect there is a way. If not, we have a hydraulic throw out bearing that is used for the MGB V6 conversion using a lot of the same stock components that your about to use.

what im doing for my t5 swap is just go get the parts from the store like you're replacing them. its actually pretty easy. and you can get a t5 just about anywhere for $300 max, so be careful not to overpay. t5's came in foxbody mustangs too, which alot of people want to deny for some reason so if you're looking for 1 in a junkyard, dont overlook the mustangs

If your going to get one out of a car, you may as well get the driveshaft too, if the trans comes out of an F-body. Yes, T5's came in fox bodies, but the bellhousing would be different, but luckily they are bolted on.

A bit of information for you

There are Lots of cars that came with the T5. That doesn't make it smart to just bolt any one of them into your car.

Here is a list of vehicles with tag numbers:

The best choice is to purchase all 1993-95 parts for your car. You can purchase an earlier 2.8L V6 T5 but there are differences in the bellhousing, speedo cable rather than VSS, bellhousing type, clutch type and hydraulics. It might be best to find a salvage yard that has one installed and take all the bits and pieces out.

While your at it, your better off going for a manual PCM, but not the end of th eworld to leave the stock one in place. We have used the auto computers in manual cars but prefer the manual computer just so it will not give other potential issues.

The idea of finding the $300 box? Sure, Just don't expect a warrantee or anything else and it may need a rebuild for another $400 plus a bellhousing and all the other parts which really adds up.

Not to argue or discredit you, BMC, but ff it has the ratios he wants, I don't see why it would make any sense to not get one from any car that has those ratios. I mean, if it doesn't come out of a high power car, it's not going to hurt anything because it's not going into a high powered car. The ones that came out of low power cars would most likely be cheaper anyways. And as for no warranty on a $300 transmission, both the 4T60e I bought for my 91, and the Mazda M5OD-R1 in my truck ran me $300. If my memory serves me correctly, both had a 90 day, unlimited mile warranty from the junkyards, and those were not you-pull-it transmissions, they were pulled before I even called them. Yeah, it isn't a long warranty period, but it is long enough for you to find out if you have a bad transmission. Also, I present this for you. Only 2 kits on there were over $400. But that doesn't mean I would get the cheapest kit. If it were me, I would shoot for one out of a Camaro before getting a Mustang one to keep things simple. I would also check around on Camaro and Mustang boards to see which rebuild kits they prefer to use before just buying the first one I saw. I would also look around on F-body sites, because I'm sure you aren't the first person to do this, so someone probably has all of the information you need on one page on the internet somewhere. Research is golden, right beside Google.

              yep

and the u pull it junkyards im getting parts from also have a 90 parts warranty. more than long enough to figure out if its working.
i dont know about everyone else here, but i try my best to do everything on the cheapness. especially with the way this economy is. when we're all getting layed off, junkyard parts start looking pretty nice. even if they do require a bit more work. the cheap way isn't always the easy way, but they'll both get the job done
