  • Question : is my transmission f*****

I am asking this for a friend. He has a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 MPFI and 4T60 (non E). He said he was driving normally and no being stupid (for once) and it suddenly made a bang noise and he now does not have any gears at all. There is no forward or reverse, and park does not engauge.

He also said the fluid looks fine (pinkish-brown), and the level is correct.

When I talked to him this evening, he said it tried to engauge, but then dropped back out.

What do you think it can be, or does he just need to get a new tranny?

Thanks. I told him it was fubar, but I figured I would post here to be sure.

I have already told him to start watching for a new tranny.

Well, The transmission I must say IMO that its fubar all gears act like nuetral even PARK. The plus side is I have located me a good 4T60 from a 1990 Cutlass Supreme International that checked out alright. Just gotta go back and finish removing the tranny from the engine in the morning.

tear your old one apart and see what happened.

            I'm curious. How many miles?

I'll guess chain.....but that's just an inexperienced guess

The new Z06 exposes European sports cars for what they really are....overprice, underperforming snobs.

its definitely fubar, why be shocked considering it came out of a fwd pontiac... get another one & put it in, they are cheap enough if you look around on www.craigslist.com and navigate to the state & area you live in.

The 4T60 is at 199,638 miles. Suprised it made it that long in all honesty.

Can't really tear into it to far since its in the car yet, but I dropped the pan and low and behold its metal shave city in there.

Went and picked up a new trans for only $73 WITH a warrenty. Dropped the pan on it today and the fluid is pinkish-red, nothing looks busted, doesnt smell burnt, and it looks like everything engauges into gear like it should so I picked out what appears to be a good one. Trans came out of a 1990 Cutlass Supreme International with the 3.1L/4T60 combo.
