  • Transaxle recommendation

I need you you guys to recommend me an automatic transmission. Here are the specs of my build:

1997 Cavalier (completely swapped to 01 grand am gt wiring harness)
    3400 with the following goodies:
ported 3500 topend w/ polished combustion chambers
    stage 3 turbo cam
    comp springs and retainers
    ss valves
    knife edged crank
    crank scraper
    custom shorty headers

I'm looking to drive the car on the street a couple times a month, but mostly at the track on the weekend.

Also, could you recommend decent stall?

A 3k or 3250 stall. I would go with a 3k if I were doing a lot of street driving.

You have a turbo cam, but I don't see a turbo kit in your mod list.

    Which trans do you have?

I appologise for not mentioning that. I do not have a "kit" so far I only have a super 60 that I'm gonna rear mount where the gas tank used to be.

      Should I go w/ a 4t45e or something a little beefier?

I'm not sure what trans would fit in your car. I don't really know of any built 4t45e's but i'm sure it could be done. If a 4t60e fits then I know those can be built to handle whatever you want. 4t65e aftermarket parts can be swapped over if you find a shop that knows what they are doing.

These 2 shops can help you with aftermarket parts and building you a trans to meet your needs. There are other shops but these vendors can build you something in a timely manner.

My money is slightly infavor of tripleedge for a custom project. But I would defiantly talk to both vendors.

the car originally had a 3t40 non E. LOL I swapped to the 01 GAGT wiring harness so I would atleast have tranny controls. do you know the physical size difference between the 4t45e and 4t60e? I just don't want the trans to blow immediately.

I would probably just stick with a 4T45-E. Plug and plag to the GAGT harness, and should last under more power considering the lower weight of a '97 Cavy over the '01 GAGT.

What cars should I be looking to get this out of? I know the newer years had a couple of revisions to make them a little stronger. Any car in particular have a better FDR? Should I still look for a 3k stall? What about an LSD?

I dunno.... I'd go for the biggest trans you can fit in there. You have basically what loner has in his corsica and he is eating stock 4t60-es.

                with LA1, LX9, LX5 parts
Manifold-back 2.5" SS Mandrel Exhaust. Hardware is SS too.

I can fit just about and transmission in there but I've read that I can keep w/ stock axles on the 4t45e. I think I'm gonna try one of those w/ an LSD first then have one built. What fdr should I be looking for?
