  • Question : transmission modulator

I have a hunch that replacing the transmission modulator will fix my p1870 code. I don't have any trouble with the transmission, shifts great but I get this annoying code.

Can someone tell me where the transmission modulator is located on my 96 monte z34? Also, there are three things that need to be purchased, I'm not sure what the transmission valve is, can anyone elaborate?

    transmission modulator
    the transmission valve
    and O ring

    Thanks,

Modulator throwing a code? Hmm. What's the code say/mean?

You can get a $15 Pioneer adjustable one, turn it up to firm up and quicken the shifts. Just ask for adjustable modulator for a TH350, TH400, etc and it should show up. Oriellys has em. Worked great on my 4t60-e.

No the modulator is not throwing the code. I don't need an adjustable just OEM.

Hey, can you tell me where it's located?

      Thanks,

Thanks bszopi, you guys aren't so bad after all. Might you be able to tell me where it is? Is it that big cylinder thing with that huge vac line under the air filter housing?

Your P1870 is due to torque converter clutch slip. That is usually caused by worn valves in the valve body (one in particular). The valve is shuttled very rapidly by a PWM solenoid and wears the bore out, allowing converter apply pressure to leak, wiping out the clutch in the converter.

You're in for a rebuild to get rid of that code. On the plus side, you can add a stall converter and change the final drive gearing while you're in there, as well as a shift kit.

Yep, nothing fun I'm sure. Thanks for the information.

I'll run it into the ground then give it a rebuild.
