  • HM282 horrible screaching while cranking engine

For 3 years I've been running an MK7 mated to a slightly modified 3400. Recently I acquired a new Z24 that was already 3400 swapped with an auto, and an HM282 with all swap parts. I sold the 3400 in that car and swapped in my 3400 from my old Z that had the MK7.

The 282 sat dry for about 5 years. When it was out of the car, the input shaft spun freely, and the shift select levers shifted easily and smoothly. It currently has a clutchnet 6 puck ceramic clutch with a clutchmasters PP. The flywheel is the same one I used with the MK7, which originally came from a 4 banger. I'm pretty sure they are the same between i4 and v6 correct? Anyway I also installed a new TOB as well.

So I'm ready to start the z24. Transmission is in neutral, all is ready to go. I start cranking to build oil pressure. For about 30 seconds all is fine, and then a horrible screaching noise is coming from the transmission, bell housing area. Frustrated I give up for the day.

I've come to realize that it's usually fine for the first 30 seconds. But then the noise happens every time I try to crank it untill like the next day when I try.

Does anybody have any clue what's going on at all? Any help would be appreciated.

you have the axles installed right?

Mine did the same thing last time, trans was mostly dry and i didn't have the axles installed when i fired it up. It sounded like hell.. once i put the axles and fluid in everything went back to normal.

Yes, the axles are in and the fluid level is ok. Everything seems to move freely. Do you think the upper internals could still be dry since I have fired the engine yet?

I would go with TOB or starter. You have a spare start to swap in for a hot minute?

No spare starter unfortunately. The current starter is a brand new 3400 starter. It litterally has started the car less than 200 times. What exactly would you say is wrong with the TOB? Not lining up with the fingers on the PP correctly?

I would say defective. Try CAREFULLY squirting some lube on the TOB IF you can. You might need to split the trans from engine as much as possible and go through the dust shield area. Dont get any on the clutch or PP surfaces.

try shorting the neutral safety switch, then crank the engine. that way, there isn't any force on the TOB or the thrust bearing in the engine. all you have to do is unplug the connector and stuff a single wire in the socket. BTW don't crank the engine more than 15 seconds with the plugs in.
