  • Question : Need to rebuild my 4T60e....where do I get parts

My trans is finally on the way out. Lots of spirited driving and auto-xing...I'm surprised it has lasted this long.

    126k miles.

I JUST did a pan drop, filter and fluid change along w/a trans cooler and accumulator springs 2k miles ago.

well, I was driving around town and started slipping worse than snot on ice in 2 and 3.

the 2-3 shift was WEAK also. I had to stop at a light and went to take off....and went NOwhere for 5 seconds.....I had to easy it up to speed.

anything over 1/4 throttle and all it would do is rev.

...so, now, where do I get rebuild parts and can I put 65-e parts in it?
How do I make it the best possible?

I have a local Gen2 GP guy who rebuilt his 65-e 30k miles ago and it is still holding. He drag races ALOT too....~300whp and it's still holding. He'll help me rebuild it.

what about a new diff....I'll need one of those too.

I'm thinking your pump has an issue. I bet the roller bearing for the shaft has worn out and the shaft has dropped which is why you are having slip and neutraling issue. You can buy a rebuild kit from either rock auto or napa online. I'm not sure as to where to get more grabbier clutches but from how my gear box worked....you wont be needing them. It will shift pretty firm after the rebuild and there after. I would also shim the 3-4 accumulator while you have all that apart. the only way youll keep the differential together is if you refrain from peg leg burnouts or get an LSD of some sorts.

what about a new diff.....The stock one has to be pretty worn from all the auto-xing I do....

and for the record, the trans does NOT make any weird noises.

any part numbers on what Kit I should buy?

I don't want to OVER buy, but also, want to make sure I have enough to do a complete Job.

For a fwd trans, you can never really "over do" it. I suggest contacting zzp and seeing about a 4t60e with 65e internals to keep your wiring simple.

If you need a diff, I have a good one from a 4t60e. Let me know and I'll have it out ASAP.

I'm looking to keep the rebuild as cheap as possible.

I don't NEED to beef it up crazy. I just need it to last ~30k miles.

hopefully I'll have something new in the works to swap in......seeing as I only put on ~2k miles a year....30k miles will last me a while...

3400 modified has the answers. You get this book (forget the name) ebay has it cheap like $12 or $20 bucks. It shows you how to do it.

You get a transstar rebuild kit which has good raysbestos clutches in it. Then you get the valve body correction fix shift kit thing (fixes the whole slipping issue caused by worn valve body). You also get a few hardened parts that are not hardened from the factory that like to fail and blow up. One is the reverse reaction drum shell (stove pipe thing) and the other off hand I know of is the 4th gear input shaft - the teeth grind off... Bulkparts.com IIRC is the place and there might be another to order the parts.

A new converter is a good idea as well. Shimming the accumulators and adding another spring for firmer shifts.

I might have to rebuild mine soon, as I got a growling noise coming from my drivers side but the wheel bearing is tight. it may just be the bearing though I guess I;ll change it and find out. I have a ~215k on my trans. I did add the GM seal conditioner years ago that fixed the not wanting to go into gear when cold issue, and and adjustable modulator that firmed up and speed up the shifts tremendously (factory one was wearing out anyway cause WOT was sloppy too)....

Anyway yeah a transstar rebuild kit, a few hardened parts, shim/spring the accumulators for better shifts and the valve body shift kit (correction fix) and you'll be good for more than 30k.

The improved valvebody parts are made by Sonnax. I also hear some parts from the 96 and up 4t60-e's were improved but not sure what exactly.

Make sure the book is for the 4t60-E. I think ebay had a bunch or amazon. Either way it was $25 or less when I looked.

                          Yeah sonnax is it.

Yeah the 96+ had a simpler design or something inside. Like several parts were combined into one. 98+ had something better in them that was more durable. This is all from memory not sure specifics.

Bump on this. Mine shifts fine but making some horrible noises and vibrating the steering wheel. So I'm going to be rebuilding too.

Where do I get the valve body shift kit correction fix thing?

I have a local GP club friend helping me w/ the rebuild....he did his 97 GTP's 65e 30k miles ago and has NO problems since. He is also running 300whp (dyno proven) and a buttload of TQ. I also have the ASTG manual for reference, so putting it back together won't be too difficult, I just need to know what parts to put back in, where to get stuff, and what 65e parts will work fit and work better in my 60e.

                              Got it tore apart today.

                              Ok, here's where I'm at........

*The Diff looks great...not any abnormal wear and the teeth are all in great shape.
*Trans chain is WAY loose and WAY out of spec
*1-2 clutch is in great shape, and still has the factory lettering on it.
*pump looks good, but not sure on what the measurement specs are supposed to be on it
                              *accumulator springs look great

**where do I get another chain, and is there an upgraded one I can use from a 65e that is a direct swap? I'm not switching FDR's, or looking to make this any harder on myself
**What numbers do I need to use to chec the pump vanes to see if they are in spec?
**Also, w/ the transstar rebuild kit (can someone link me to the best one please?) don't I forgo the plastic thrust washers and get steel ones from GM?.....or something along those lines?

                              Here's the case

                              again....

all the internals wrapped in plastic garbage bags to keep them as clean as possible till reinstallation
