  • Question : which 5 speed is this?

    I am going to look at a 5 speed out of a 92 cavalier RS in a few days. I want to know which model this is and if it would be any good for a 3400/3500 hybrid build, if not which should I look for?

    if it's bolted to a V6 then it's a NVGT-550 and yes, it's a good tranny. It's external slave as well which is an advantage.
    Past Builds;
    1991 Z24, 3500/5 Spd. 275WHP/259WTQ 13.07@108 MPH
    1989 Camaro RS, ITB-3500/700R4. 263WHP/263WTQ 13.52@99.2 MPH
    Current Project;
    1972 Nova 12.73@105.7 MPH

      tranny type correction

      Accually the NVG tranny was introduced to the cavalier in 1993 and 1994. 1992 and earlier trannys were the Getrag Muncie 5 speed.
      Why do I do this to myself?

        Actually the NVG was introduced in '92, it remained external slave for that 1 year, then both the Muncie HM282 and the NVG trannies switched to the same internal slave design. Check the sticker on a 92 trans

        91 and older V6 trans are HM282's, after that GM changed the contract and New Venture Gear took over building only the V6 trannies for the 1992-1994 model years. Muncie/Getrag continued to build the Quad 4 version till 1994 which is nearly identical (except for the different gear ratios).

        It really makes no difference, they are all of the same quality. External slave versions seem to have less issues in performance applications.
